"You can't go wrong here" 2010-04-02

By M. Ezekiel (Rayne, Louisiana)

I bought this primarily because my daughter occasionally needs an external CD/DVD for her new Asus netbook she got last Christmas, but WOW did we get more than our money's worth. I didn't expect to get such a well thought-out product for the money. I use this product to burn family documents such as annual tax records to DVD's in case of a catastrophe. The included software is pretty complete, and includes provisions to encrypt your data as well. You don't have to encrypt the entire disc either. It burns all compatible discs flawlessly, including dual-layer. The drive is really compact and goes anywhere (without requiring an external power supply). One of the best purchases I've ever made for sure. Highly recommended!

"Great alternative when optical drive doesn't work!" 2010-03-26

By einre

Purchased this as a gift and an alternative to the built in optical drive on my dad's 8 year old laptop. He uses the laptop to browse the internet and watch dvd's but the optical drive wouldn't recognize dvds anymore. It has worked out great although I also had to get him a usb hub because his laptop only has 2 usb ports and the ASUS external drive requires 2 ports to be connected.

So far it has been working good for him and is very easy to use especially since my dad is not too keen on computers. He likes it because it is very slim and small, light weight, and very portable. The only downside he has mentions is the video appears a little dark, but this maybe due to his laptop being a bit outdated.

"Quick way to add DVD RW capability to a PC" 2010-03-26

By Dave McCave (Livingston, New Jersey United States)

I have an older PC with a DVD ROM drive only. Upgrade to an internal DVD RW drive's is a more expensive solution and the installation would be more cumbersome, so I choose the USB route. Fortunately, I had already installed a USB2.0/firewire card for connecting to my digital cameras and ipods, so USB connectivity is not a problem. However, I had to connect both USB cable to make this work properly. Bummer! You need one for the I/O and the other for power. Windows XP auto-detected the device and loaded the driver automatically so that was easy. You may need to connect everything up before you power-up and boot your PC for auto-detect to work properly. You can see the drive icon for the new DVD drive in My_Computer from Windows Explorer. The stand can only mount the drive in one direction not both (for left sided installation versus right sided installation), so for my setup, I wanted the DVD drive to be on the left of my desktop therefore I cannot used the stand. ASUS pay attention, make it universal for both left and right. I just laid it flat on the desktop next to my PC.

I would definitely recommend this as an inexpensive upgrade for an older low end or mid-range PC (4-5 years old). Good value and good buy.

 "Love it!" 2010-03-25

By Hugo G. Cardey

I found that this dvdrw it's perfect in it's size. Ok, it's 8x, but definitelly I'm not in a hurry burning 100 dvd's. It's light and small enough to carry when I need to. The small plastic support that came with the unit (lets me put the whole thing in a vertical position) is very usefull, but no for me (I use ocasionally the unit and back to the box). The white color is beautiful.

 "ASUS USB external drive." 2010-03-23

By Inspector Gadget (NC)

Drive works well. I find that there is some vibration even when placed in the upright stand provided, but this is my first external since a 3 1/2 floppy drive. For the price it is everything I would want. It is a little ackward to use portable as I bought it for use with the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-Netbook, but that's what I have USB flashdrives for. Overall the read and write speeds are comparable to the other internal drives I use and works good even with a DVD without any noticible distortion. For general all round use its great, if you need extra speed I can't comment as a movie is all tested.

 "spotty performance" 2009-01-30
By Stanton M. Zobel (St. Paul, MN)
I bought this to use with my MacBook Air. The size is great and it is portable. When it writes it is fast and produces a good copy. The problem is that about 50% of the time, it won't read commercial disks. It's frustrating and more often than not, I choose to use my older LiteOn 4x writer. If you are spending close to a hundred dollars, my advice is to look elsewhere.

"Small and powerful, but overloaded my USB port" 2009-06-24
By Steven Allmon (Etowah, TN United States)
I recently purchased this unit from Amazon for my laptop. Frankly, the price was a large factor in my decision. The unit is VERY small, very light weight and it works well. It derives power from a USB port ( both USB data and power cord are included with the unit), which is my only complaint. I use mine with a Dell Inspiron that is a few years old, runninf Windows XP and with only 2 USB ports. I use it as my primary desktop / laptop, so a USB extender port hub was a necessity. Unfortunately, the DVD writer causes too much of a power surge. Simple fix, though, I just bought a power convertor / charger for USB and connected the unit's power USB to the port on the convertor / charger. Software CD Rom included was not a big help and the programs included ( Nero et al) aren't all that new or as fast as newer programs. Regardless, the burner works well, has a very small foot print and is priced very competetively.

"nero 8 software is like a bait and switch" 2009-08-08
By quindici (Portland, OR, USA)
This is not a review of the DVD player itself, but a note of warning on the Nero8 "free" software packaged with it.

On initial installation and use, I notice that "some" dvds can play with sound, but others do not. Those that do not require a specific plug-in, one that can be downloaded from the Nero website FOR A FREE 30 DAY TRIAL What I'm led to believe is that I can download the module for a 30 day free trial and if, afther that amount of time, I want to continue having sound, I'll have to purchase the full product upgrade, perhaps doubling the cost of the original purchase.

Sadly, to me, this represents a bait and switch ploy. There was no mention of this prior to purchasing the DVD player with the nero8 essentials disc included in the purchase. Would I feel any differently if I bought, for example, a new car and it came with a speedometer that ceased to function without a paid upgrade after 30 days of free trial? I don't like feeling that I've been had.

The software provided with the DVD player is called Nero 8 Essentials. Sound, since the advent of the Talkies, seems to be an essential feature. Be Forewarned.

 "Super-slim and no complicated set-up..." 2009-07-30
By The Taminator (The Sovereign State of Indiana)
I bought this to install software to my Dell Mini 9, and it worked like a charm right out of the box. It's slim, lightweight, and quiet. Best of all, Windows XP automatically recognized it, so all I had to do was plug it in. I have no idea how this will affect battery life since I don't usually run on the battery, but it does take 2 USB ports to power it. There are only 3 USB ports on the Dell Mini 9, so if you need to leave it plugged in for any length of time you should keep that in mind.

It installed software and burned backup CDs and DVDs as well or better than any other drive I have had. Discs snap into a tray that looks like most CD/DVD drives on standard laptops. The only way to improve it would be to make it run on a single USB port instead of two, but other than that it's a great drive. I don't think you'll get a better value in the portable category & highly recommend it.

"Good burner, but one item to watch out for" 2009-07-18
By David R. Adams (Grand Rapids, MI USA)
I just bought this and it seems to work just fine. Nothing fancy.

It requires 2 free USB ports (look at the picture on Amazon). On my MacBook Pro the USB ports are on opposite sites of the computer, and the cable JUST reaches if I stretch the cable across the top of my keyboard (doesn't obstruct any keys). Kind of annoying, but I only use the burner occasionally.

 "Cute product, some limitations" 2009-06-06
By George K. (Mountain View CA)
I bought the Iomega superslim DVD writer as an accessory for a Windows XP version of the Acer Netbook. I used the Iomega DVD drive to load software...without a hitch. I had hoped to use the Iomega product as a backup device for various laptops, and I was disappointed. The bundled software, Nero 8 OEM is a huge software package (468 MB) with more license limitations on media types than I can list here. If you own an older version of Nero, you will find that it works quite well with the Iomega product. Using the Iomega DVD writer as a backup device on my two Dell laptops requires an external power supply, not included with the Iomega product. Reading disks works quite well off of USB power. Writing data files consistently fails with messages about USB power surges from Windows. With some significant limitations, this product gets a 3 out of 5 from me...but it should probably be a 2.

"Small and Portable Extra Super Slim" 2009-05-09
By J. Lee
I brought this over the slightly cheaper Samsung because when I compared the size this unit is more compact. From the manufacturer site, this unit measures 6x5.25x0.625 inch, compared to the Samsung which is 6.2x5.5x0.75. So is 1/8" thinner. Strength wise it seems solidly built to me but you can't push down on the top while closing as the door can hit the top lip to prevent it from shutting completely. The unit is also lighter than the Samsung, 0.62 lbs compared to the 0.93 lbs so maybe it is thinner metal but I don't have a Samsung unit to compare it to. I wanted as small and portable a unit to match my netbook so I went with this unit and it is working fine for me.
