 "amazing" 2010-05-07

By S. Winters (Columbus, OH USA)

I bought this as a christmas present for my boyfriend, and HE LOVES IT. It has been almost half a year and he says it still runs perfectly. This is a fast, stylish (very shiny and sleek), and light netbook. I would definitely recommend this to everyone!

 "Great netbook!" 2010-04-21

By Pacman (CA, USA)

I purchased this netbook for my wife for her birthday. She is big user of Facebook and email and would have to fire up our large HP desktop computer and stay there to keep updated before she got this netbook. Now she can surf all day long with this netbook anywhere in the house! She absolutely loves it (I was worried at first since she doesn't normally like tech gifts).

The only problem we had was that the battery would never charge above about 90%, so the battery charge indicator would never go green. Even with that, it still would run 8+ hours!! After about a month of use, the battery did start charging to 100% (and the indicator turns green now).

I looked at several other models and almost bought the Best Buy version of this Eee PC - DON'T! The Best Buy model seems to use a smaller battery and still costs the same or more than Amazon.

If you need a netbook, this is one of the best.

"Avoid this -- as long as it ships with Windows 7" 2010-04-18

By Mark Fury (USA! USA! USA!)

Fair warning -- the computer ran pretty well for the few weeks we had it after Christmas. And then . . . the problems started. Just Google "Windows 7" and "Public Network." Our "Netbook" cannot get online. We've tried solution after solution with no luck. Do NOT buy this "Netbook" if you want to actually get on the internet!

Very dissatisfied. No support/help from Asus, and of course none from Microsoft. Everyone blames someone else.

 "Great little machine!" 2010-04-11

By G. Stiller (Harrisburg, PA United States)

I've had this netbook for a little over two months, and am thoroughly pleased with this machine. It does exactly what I need it to do (internet and light Office work) with ease. I swapped out the ram for a 2 GB stick, so I can't say if I would get the same results "out of the box" (that is, with only 1 GB ram). Battery life is excellent (if not what it's listed by the manufacturer), 8 hours or so on a single charge. Windows 7 loads extremely fast (compared to my Win XP machine). Asus website has a utility program to allow you to change your wallpaper (stupid limitation of Win 7 starter), no need for any of the other "bells and whistles" of full blown Win 7 OS (this IS a netbook, not a more powerful laptop). If you are looking for an inexpensive machine to do light computing work, you can't go wrong with this one!

"Great Machine - Slow Service" 2010-04-07

By Karen Spraker (LANCASTER, VA USA)

Got the machine in December and love it. Its not the only computer I have but I use it for reading newspapers and Kindle for PC books as well as browsing. A couple weeks ago it developed a connection problem between the machine and the screen. Customer service was great when I called but they warned me that service could be 7-10 days in house. Didn't have any choice but to send it in. They weren't kidding. I shipped the machine (at my expense)and 14 days later the tracking info says I should have it back today. For warranty work they should have paid shipping both ways and it should not have taken this much time.

"Windows 7 Starter is garbage" 2010-04-30

By The Forsaken (deep beneath the earth)

Thought long and hard on writing this review but the frustration I have impedes me from doing so.Short & simple then: I've been a die hard Windows XP Pro user for about 6 years.I even thought Win XP Home on my Acer netbook was very decent.Bought this Asus for one reason only:Battery life.

Never tried Vista cause I heard it was horrible...Well Win7 Starter is the same exact thing.Extremely frustrating.Im not a computer genius, But I am savvy. There is a new learning curve if your jumping from XP to Windows 7.

The netbook itself is great.I really like it, (and Im gonna like it even more when I ditch Win7 Starter) what kills it for me is the OS.On that alone I would not recommend this to anyone unless you are planning on upgrading to Home or Premium or whatever they call it now.Windows 7 Starter is absolute garbage.I remember when buying a pc or laptop included a complete OS.Shame on Microsoft for using this tactic to leech off another $200 from the consumer.I read a review by one of Microsoft's top people. He said this is what the consumer wanted and went on and on justifying why they put out this garbage. That netbook users are casual users etc. Im a consumer & no, this is not what I wanted or expected.I use my netbook more than my regular laptop at home.I run Photoshop CS4 on my Acer netbook & many other apps.I take it everywhere I go & use it for different tasks.Taking notes, chatting, organizing files on 3 portable harddrives etc etc

And I will not be upgrading.I will be installing Windows XP Pro Lite which is blazing fast and doesnt have to "Load" when you do something as simple as clicking on "My Computer".

I did it on my Acer which had XP Home and now its faster with XP Pro Lite.

Don't buy this.Only reason why Im keeping it, is 'cause of the battery life.

Hope this helps

 "1005PE PU27 Almost perfect!" 2010-04-28

By W. R. Andrus (Fairfax, VA USA)

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU27-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life)

PROs: Light weight, great textured matte black rubberized surface, remarkable battery life, great improvement over 1005HA-P, Express (Rapid access Linux) feature access

CONs: Short Right Shift key, 0.3MP Webcam, shared (not dedicated) Video memory, no recovery DVD, no slipcover, shiny LCD surface (glare magnet)

This is our fourth ASUS Eee PC Netbook, fifth Netbook counting our Samsung. Turned it on, set up Windows 7 Starter, updated RAM to 2GB Kingston, migrated in our settings and files, and can't go back to my 1005HA-P Seashell. Snappy, solid feel without excess weight, great slope for the keyboard with the battery at the back. Pretty much agree with the previous 10 reviews (except for our lack of hardware problems). Waiting for iGo to produce a tip for it. Same Auto DC adapter as the 1005HA and 1008 models. Already see a tussle brewing over who grabs it first. If this had the 64MB dedicated DDR3 Graphics memory, Ion and Broadcom graphics and HD chips, matte surface LCD, matte surface keyboard surround, 1.3MP Webcam and retained the 14 Hour maximum battery life, and the Right Shift key off the 1000HE keyboard, it would be darned near perfect. But at $339.22 with 2 day shipping, compared to the 1005PE-PU17-BK with its fingerprint-magnet surfaces and usual $364 On-line price, this is a fabulous bargain.

 "Well worth the money" 2010-04-27

By Dusty Roads (Virginia Beach, VA)

I just paid $340 for this netbook, and it was well worth the money. I bought it for my wife to use around the house, and to take with her to class. Once she got used to using the smaller 'laptop' she loves it. I did all the research I could and came down to the fact that this was the best buy. The build quality, features (including Bluetooth!), low heat output, and excellent battery life I've seen on it so far make me feel like I could've paid $400 for it.

The first thing I did was try a recovery using the hidden partition. You basically don't need any CD like the one review complained about. The recovery partition acts as your restore cd. The 3 step directions are in the short user manual on how to use it. I restored it to factory settings in about 15 minutes, just to try it out.

Next thing I did was clean up all the extra add-on softare. There's plenty to remove so try out everything first, then decide what you can remove to free up some resources.

Another intersting feature is the 'instant on' feature. It's like another power button, but boots right into a menu that will open a basic web browser and let you get on the internet, all without ever having to wait to boot into Windows. I could see her using it to quickly jump on and look up something.

Adding another 1GB of RAM would probably be nice, but she's not crunching anything intensive on this thing to make it worthwhile. If you're doing a lot of multi-tasking you probably want a beefier laptop anyway. Maybe down the road when the RAM is $20 we'll throw it in, but she's only doing one or two things at a time anyway.

I'm an IT professional and would recommend this over anything else right now to those looking for a netbook. You won't find anything else that compares at this price range.

"Excellent netbook, but requires some technical knowledge" 2010-04-18

By Roman M. Tedeschi

I've had this netbook for about a week now and I absolutely love it. However, when I first turned it on and used it (after fully charging the battery, of course) I hated it. Subconciously comparing it to my much larger, more powerful Dell was part of the reason, but the biggest problem was the bloatware.

All computers come with extra programs and this netbook was no exception. It had a lot of extra crap starting up with Windows that slowed everything down. I probably uninstalled half of the programs before doing anything else. I uninstalled every Asus or Eee PC program except for the "AsusUpdate for Eee PC". Follow the guide that the first reviewer wrote and you'll be ok (although I haven't put any new RAM in mine). Also check out the Eee PC forum for lots of useful info.

Now that I'm used to it, I'm so happy I decided on this Asus. The battery life really is incredible with the big battery, Intel Atom, and Super Hybrid Engine. I used it for an hour and a half at a coffee shop today, then checked the battery and it said 10 hours remaining! It looks great, runs quickly (for a netbook), and is very quiet.

Great little computer, but your PC knowledge should at least include uninstalling unnecessary programs and updating BIOS to get the most out of this netbook (or any Windows PC, for that matter).

 "Ordered February 26th... died April 29th..." 2010-04-29

I should have been concerned that the item in question was buzzing when I plugged it in. I should have questioned the amount of heat it put out. I didn't and now I am out twenty dollars due to this items shady build quality. Please do not buy this charger. Move on and buy an official one. The dollars you spend are worth it now rather than spending more down the road like I will have to do so I can get an official ASUS EEE PC charger.

 "Works for a while" 2010-04-09

By Robin J. Porter (Richmond VA)

I bought two of these to replace the cords that came with the ASUS netbooks my children use. They worked great - for about 4 months. Then they shorted out, both of them. I think that for the cost they did a good job but they aren't shaped exactly like the ones that came with the netbook and the way the plug fits into the jack on the computer it just sits awkwardly and they don't last.

 "The Dignity of Self-Immolation" 2010-01-19

By Adam Hall (Tallahassee)

I ordered this last summer after my girlfriend's roommate's dog decided to use my original charger as a chew toy. At the time, I was in a hurry and did not thoroughly research this purchase.I thought I was getting a genuine Asus charger, which wasn't the case. At any rate, it arrived and seemed to work fine (even though it did indeed have a straight male adapter as opposed to the right-angle one shown in the image).

Last month I was sitting in my usual spot (the dining room table) when I heard a pop and fizzle come from the adapter. The green LED slowly faded away. As I sat in silence, mourning the death of my gadget, the familiar smell of burning plastic and metal reached my nose. It was obvious that something shorted inside of the adapter.

Needless to say, I will be trying to find an official Asus charger now. Something I should have done in the first place.

 "Fried My Netbook" 2009-12-14

By Bob Abouille (detroit, mi)

After 6 months, my original charger stopped working and I bought this one. I noticed it was lighter, and seemed to be more cheaply made than the original one.

The first time I used it, everything was ok until I tried to turn my netbook on again after shutting it down. It was unresponsive. I plugged it back into the old charger, which still worked intermittently and left it there over night. When I woke up, I noticed the battery charging light was on, so I turned it on and it worked.

Over the next day I tried to decide if the new charger was to blame and for whatever reason I started using it again. Once more, everything worked fine until I shut down and tried to start up again. My netbook is dead. It's been weeks, I have plugged it in to both chargers, in outlets across the house. It's over.

It's over, Johnny.

"The plug is NOT intended for using in the US" 2010-03-25

By L. XIAO (Cerritos, CA, USA)

I bought it from this vendor called "Westronics". My original Asus adapter had been twisted too much and decided to quit. I found the authentic one sold by Amazon.com for $50, that's 1/8 of how much I paid for my netbook. So I decided to give this OEM one a try. It seemed to be working fine, however I just found out that the 2-pin plug is not US standard, these two pins have equal width, so it won't fit the wall outlet tightly, that's why it was almost out of battery when I tried to use it, I thought it had been charged overnight, but it was not because the plug fell out the wall outlet. I also agree with one of the reviewers who mentioned the spark when you plug or unplug it.

 "Absolutely lovely" 2010-03-30

This is the cheapest and simplest computer I've ever bought - I have been using Macs for twenty years and have owned some expensive and sophisticated equipment over the years - but this little netbook is probably the one I have been more excited about than any of the others.  "Easy to use, portable and worth the money" 2010-02-07

By Justine Kirby (New York, NY USA)

While I've never been a big fan of touchpads and related buttons to replace a mouse when I've used laptops in the past, I found the touchpad on the ASUS Eee PC Seashell pretty easy to use and considered going without a mouse. However, after buying the mouse, I highly recommend it to others. It makes the Seashell materially easy to navigate. The mouse is also very small, so it's easy to cart around with the Seashell. So well worth the few extra dollars.

"It's OK, but I wish I would gone wireless instead..." 2010-02-06

By T. C. Bader (DFW Area)

I mainly got this mouse to match my ASUS Eee 1005HA netbook, but now wish I would have gone with a wireless mouse.

I am currently going to school, and when I take out the AC adapter, my headphones, and this mouse, it is all one tangled mess!

Even with the relatively short cord (in all, the whole thing is about 35" from end to end), between the three things mentioned about, it still all turned into a big tangled mess.

I think a wireless mouse would at least eliminate some of the tangle.

Also, $17 is a bit much for a simple corded USB mouse I think, but it is quite responsive, but then again, with a 10" screen, it doesn't take much movement to move across the entire screen.

Also, this mouse is pretty low profile (about 1" tall), and is only 3" long, and 2" wide, in case anyone has any problems with low profile mice.

I hope this helps!

 "Asus Netbook" 2010-04-21

By basketsilike

I travel a lot and realized my Blackberry was not enough to do all the business I need to be doing online. This netbook is perfect! It received high ratings and I can see why. The keyboard is small, as to be expected, but I recently bought a mouse so it will make it easier to get around. I was in a hurry when setting it up and I accidently hit "German" for language. Not good as once you pick your language, you can't change it. We had to call Asus and ended up having to reinstall everything. So, when you are setting up your computer, a word of advice. Take your time! Its all set up now and works great.

 "great for the price!!" 2010-04-14

By trini to d bone (Caribbean)

I have been searching for a netbook for about one month and I stumbled upon this model. I must say that I really like it alot. The battery life and wifi is exceptional and when I use skype I can see clearly and the other party can see me clear as well. The only negative for me not having the bluetooth feature but it is minor because I bought one on ebay for about US3.00. Windows 7 works very well and I have installed Roxio 2010 with no problems. I already have an external drive so I am downloading stuff and burning them for my personal use. I even have Kindle on it. I love this little gadget- the price was right (Amazon had it on sale) the storage is great (250) and I can take it anywhere with me without anyone having to know that I have a netbook in my purse.

"Intermittent charging problem - AC Adapter or System Board?" 2010-04-09

By LuvRVing (Blue Springs, MO)

I bought this netbook in November, upgraded the memory to 2 gigs and upgraded the OS to Win 7 Home Premium. I've been generally happy with the performance of the machine, the battery life and its ability to display downloaded movies from Amazon Unbox. My big issue is that I have had intermittent charging problems. I can't tell if the problem is the adapter or the system board. The adapter gets very hot at the tip, and the laptop gets very hot in the area where the adapter connects. I'm talking burn your finger hot. And sometimes the AC adapter just won't charge the thing at all. Keep trying, a few days later it will mysteriously work. So I called Asus technical support and went through the troubleshooting with them. All their suggestions didn't do anything; then while the analyst had me on hold to get an RMA number, it started to work again. Very, very strange problem. Anyways, the netbook is on its way back to Asus (at MY expense). I hope they can resolve the problem as I love traveling with a netbook. I have read many reviews which leads me to believe mine is NOT an isolated incident.

I also have an Acer Aspire One netbook that I had bought for my mom. It works just fine and the way the adapter plugs in seems to be better than the Asus. I like the netbook solution, especially for traveling light on a plane or in the car.

Edit - 4/20/2010 - My Asus was returned to me yesterday and it appears the system board was replaced. Everything seems to be working much better and I am happy at the moment. Also, I have compared the Asus display to the Acer display and the Asus is much brighter and easier to view. Those of you with charging problems - I recommend sending the unit back to Asus and recommend they change the system board.
