 "Audiovox is AWFUL" 2008-06-26

I couldn't get the Mintek player I wanted--it was on backorder. I was going out-of-town and I watch dvds notstop when I am away from home, and Audiovox is supposed to be good. I had had two Mintek dvd players in the past and they were great; the last one died from old age, and over-work. I received the Audiovox three days after Christmas. I watched TWO dvds and 1/2 way thru the second dvd, it died. Nothing-no audio, no video, nothing. I removed the battery, the power cord. Rebooted everything. Nothing. I let it cool off 2 hours. Restarted the Unit. Nothing.



I returned it Amazon for an exchange---same unit. I was all excited. Here I was, out-of-town again, in the same situation. Blasted thing died 1/2 way through dvd NUMBER TWO. Same problem. I used the same remedy. Nothing.



Stupid me. I thought I would go for NUMBER THREE---the old "THIRD TIME IS THE CHARM". NOTHING. The old third time, the same crap happened in the same place. Give me my MINTEK back. I will never purchase anything by Audiovox ever again.

We bought this in Sep and I have waited to se how this was going to perform before writing a review.

I am happy to say that after several family trips this player is still playing.

I had read some reviews on this and was a little worried but we have had no problems so far out of it.

I did give it one less star (4 out of 5) because, as many have said, the sound quality is poor, we fixed this by hooking up a MP3 FM adapter (if you have a cassette player you could use an adaper for it as well) up to it and running the sound through the vehicles speakers. This works great becuase I have the control of the sound :)

One word of warning, if you do this,(running the sound through your car speakers) be careful when putting movies like "Cars" in it, with the "suround sound" I swear I thought a car was about to hit me while I was driving.

Over all I give it a 4, my son loves it, it plays shows that I have recorded from TV, it has a good picture (not HD quality of course), and its simple enough to use (although the cover that comes with it has clear plastic over the buttons, wish it was cut out for the buttons to be pressed better, but thats minor)

I did remember one other thing, the remote is credit card size an was lost in no time, but that is no big problem.

I originally was going to purchase another brand, but the "epinions" were bad. I really wanted the 10" screen. What I like best about the machine is its simplicity. You just put in a disk and it determines whether it's jpeg, dvd or cd. Movies look good on the screen, too. However, be prepared for a tinny sound. The dvd's are o.k., but the cd's won't break any records for sound quality! But in my research, I found that the greatest complaint on these little, inexpensive machines came from expecting too much of them. For the price, I'm real happy!

All-in-all, this product is exactly what I was looking for in a portable DVD player. The screen is large enough and bright enough to use in day light, but not direct sunlight which seems to be a problem with all units of this type, not this specific unit.

Got a D2011 at BJs. It was packaged in the durned tuff blisterpack like plastic. Had to be real careful to avoid damaging the product getting the packaging open. Takes a relatively long time to "load" a disc. Picture looked great but the sound at full was barely above a whisper. Plugged it into TV input jacks to check sound; and there too was very low even with both the D2011 volume control at full and the TV volume at full. Plugged into my sound system, it too had to be up so far that background hum was very loud.



Note: Went to Best Buy on line, ordered a Toshiba SD-P1900SN for the same price, picked it up an hour later, and it works great. Screen an inch smaller, and the sound isn't particularly loud, but at least it works well plugged into an external amp and it "loads" the disc much quicker. The Audio[non]vox goes back to BJs.

I could have had a bad player because it looked used when it got to me, but the battery would not hold a charge at all. It also skipped like crazy especially on copied DVD's with family videos (even if it wasn't moving).



The best part about the player was the case that hooks to the seat. They should sell that alone (though mine was partly ripped).



Also, I bought it for $89. Amazon upped the price to over $250 . . . that is psychotic.



The new version, the 8503, is probably better. There has to be a reason why the 8501 was discontinued.

This is my second Coby portable DVD player. (Same one both times.) The first time it was a gift and it worked for 2 years. I only used it about once a month on longer road trips. Apparently, just the screen quit working, because it would play through the TV at home. It was never dropped or exposed to extreme temps. so I don't know why it quit, except it's cheap. I bought a second one just like it because the other options were so much more expensive and had fewer features. I assume it will be good enough for the rare use it gets on longer trips. This second one has only been used once and on my older DVDs it would freeze up occasionally. It did not do this on my brand new ones, so I assume the old ones have some scratches, but they play fine in the house and on other DVD players, so I guess it's very sensitive. If you don't mind spending more or want one to last a long time I suggest a better brand. Overall, it's pretty good for the money and it comes with a remote and case for the car and all the accessories. Others don't.

I purchased this product to use in my hobby room for entertainment while sewing or creating projects. A larger, permanent unit would have taken up too much space which I needed for better use so I chose this smaller unit. It is very easy to move from location to location (or room to room, for that matter) and the accessory case which is intended for auto use also allows it to be, with a little transition, hung from the wall. The swivel 8-inch screen is great and the picture/sound quality are outstanding. I am really very, very pleased with this COBY purchase!!!

I had owned this very model already and liked it. It held up well, in my opinion, considering it was being used by a toddler. I decided to purchase another one as we would be traveling.

With two weeks of use and it working fine this unit starting popping and hissing and filling my car with smoke, right in front of my 3 year old son as he was strapped in his car seat (it was mounted on the front seat headrest with the included holder). It was in full flames within seconds of getting IT and MY SON out of the car. I've since researched battery hazards with some Coby products. We are fine but the vehicle headrest is singed in three parts and the player is of course ruined and covered in fire extinguisher residue. I am contacting the seller and manufacturer today and will update my review after that.

I purchased this portable DVD player because we were planning a trip and the car ride was going to be a long one. It worked the whole trip down to our destination but the audio stopped functioning while we were here. This is the second DVD player I have purchased (first one was a different model) and I am so disappointed. I have no idea what we're going to do for the car ride back!

While it did work, everything was great. The picture is great, love the swivel screen and the audio was also good. I just wish it kept working for longer than a week!

First of all, let me say that I am an electronics freak and usually only purchase the highest quality TV, video, and stereo equipment. The reason I purchased the Coby is because I have a spinning bike at home and wanted a "big" and "cheap" portable DVD to watch spinning videos. I figured I would get a low quality, low volume (the 2 supplied earphones) DVD just for spinning, not really caring about the quality. Boy, was I surprised. First of all, when I put in the 1st DVD I didn't realize the volume was tunred up, and my wife yelled at me to turn it down, because she couldn't hear on the phone two rooms away. The picture quality was absolutely superb, as good as my $2,500.00 Sony Vaio. Also, I could not believe the x-tras including a mounting bag that has staps to attach to my bike. It even came with a car tape player adapter (I guess they figure if you can only afford $100.00, you must have an old car, a remote, a car charger, internal battery etc. It even has a movable screen. My spinning videos are only 75 minutes, so can't really comment about the battery life yet. I really cannot belive what a value this is. I must admit I never heard of this company, but I am really impressed with the unit. A great value for this price.

i have had this player for about 8 months now...we primarily bought it for my infant baby to play her stuff like babygenius and baby einstein etc in the car.



I will summarise the great features that we like here:

1. it comes with all the accessories, ie. one doesnt have to separately buy anything, it comes with this little strap holder to put the player in the car, a remote, car charger, elec charger, etc.

2. It is quite a sturdy player, my baby has dropped it many times when we used it at home and it has undergone many a wet fingers over it, still it continues to run smoothly.

3. Because of our excessive travelling, we use it almost 4-5 hours everyday and it does not get heated by excessive use.

4. It plays mp3 cds, audiocds, and movies... this is awesome because it serves the purpose of not just dvd player but i use it to play lullabies or devotional music in rest of time when its not playing dvds.

5. its swivel screen is awesome.

6. its picture quality is great



basically a very effective and durable product , well worth the price.

We bought this for a Christmas gift and have used it sporadically only for car trips less than a 100-150 mile radius. It slowly began losing volume with movies & we thought it might be a particular movie so we would switch to something else. It got so bad the kids could only use the earphones. The sound recently went out completely!! Even with earphones you can't hear the movie which is shame b/c the screen looks great. Since they only give you a 30 day return policy..this is money down the drain!!Take your chances if you dare.

This worked well for one DVD viewing; after which, it promptly coughed or hiccuped its way through other viewings. Sometimes, we were able to get it to work by fast-forwarding through scenes, but most of the time, it simply quit and said, "Wrong disc."



After three months of trying to get a replacement, I have given up. They are rude and are very particular about your options. Finally, I was offered a voucher for another one of their crappy products. I declined. Save the money and buy from a different company.

The first one I received, the lid that covers the DVD was open and would not stay shut during normal handling. I received a replacement and the lid stays shut but still seems to pop open easily. Other than that it works fine. I haven't used its portability yet as it is being used as a DVD player in a kid's room. Hope it holds up.

Bought this last minute for a road trip - needed to keep our small child happy. It was a good price, it shipped quickly and was set up and ready to run in no time. All in all, we're happy. If it was something for my husband or I to use on a regular basis, we may ahve spent more money and looked for some upgraded features. We bought 2 of them for the children ages 3 and 8. We love them. There is no loud motor sound as mentioned in a previous review. The volume is perfect. It can never be so loud it will hurt ears. The children can hear it just fine in the backseat and it can't be turned up so loud that the front seat has to hear it, too. The price was very reasonable and the battery has made it through about 3 hours or more of viewing before signaling low battery. I love the light weight and the small size. The picture quality has been excellent and we have been using our players frequently. I recommend these players highly!

Received as a freebee item from a vendor and so did not have high hopes for it... well, 2+ years later with almost daily use, this compact player is still going strong with no problems whatsoever. Perfect as a bedroom player with a pair of earbuds or light headphones. Image quality, sound quality (with headphones) both better than fine and it is very comfortable keeping this lightweight unit on your lap. Not the best build quality in the world and I think it helps that the unit rarely leaves the house and is used carefully. Some others have had QC problems, so I guess it's the luck of the draw, but it you get a good one and use it with care it seems you are good to go.

I purchased this DVD player in April. I've been using it almost everyday. It's working great. It can play CD, DVD, VCD. When playing CD, the screen turns off after a few minutes automatically (to save energy). The price is reasonable. It looks nice. Although Sony is more delicate, with the price of one Sony, I can buy almost two Coby DVD player ^.^
