"Near-perfect replacement for original adapter" 2010-03-12

By Victorino Fornier

Near perfect replacement for original adapter for my 1101HAB Asus netbook. The adapter that came with it overheats and shuts down. I already had it replaced by a local dealer but it still overheats so I ordered this replacement adapter. The plug is a wee bit long but since it clicks and locks in place it does not fall out when the unit is moved. After fully charging my netbook it was only warm which is normal. I can now travel without fear of an adapter shutting down.

"Good replacement for ASUS' defective power supply..." 2010-03-08

By Joe Buffaloe (Seattle, WA USA)

I got burned with one of the bad original power adapters that came with my Eee PC 1005HA, ASUS service is horrible, and i needed a working power adapter now so i could use the netbook. This one works great, and hopefully won't burn out in three months like the defective ASUS cord that ships with the netbook. Bought mine from Battery1inc because they had Fulfillment by Amazon, so i could use my free 2-day prime shipping (yay!)

 "Defective item" 2010-02-23

By Susan (Boca Raton, Florida)

Unfortunately the power adapter that I purchased was defective. I waited quite a few days for it to arrive and when it did, it was defective and did not charge the netbook, so I had to return it and wait another few days to receive a refund. I was told that it is the type of product that doesn't allow for a simple exchange. So I had to go elsewhere to buy another power charger, since I didn't want to run the risk of receiving another defective one. I am still waiting to receive it in the mail!!

 "Excellent laptop" 2010-03-20

By Gavin Stanton (New Jersey)

Some people are blind (it IS brown. Not black. You have to hold it it bright light to see this however which is elegant in my opinion) and others are just plain stupid. This laptop is hands down awesome. It does run hot, but the i7 720qm thermal specification is 100c!!! Don't worry about it running in the mid 50's to 60's range. Just make sure you turn the power cord to the back or it sort of obstructs the fans; which are dead silent. I will be buying a cooler pad for this. It has a 2-3 hour battery life depending on your battery settings. But if you are buying this machine, you are aware that the components you're buying are not low power, economy parts. They are parts designed for making your life simple and easy with regard to your laptop. And they are very successful. Windows boots to idle extremely fast and NOTHING I have done so far has caused so much as a hiccup. Streaming Pandora, running UTorrent, up to 15 Firefox tabs running, pulling viedo files off my network and burning a dvd simultaneously? The 4 physical and 4 logical cores barely move. Feel free to check your email in the meantime. I would recommend reinstalling windows 7 with the disc to a single drive. You will have to reinstall the drivers and whatnot, but this is a very simple task. It eliminates the bloatware others have complained about. By the way, the bloatware didn't slow this thing down a hair the first time I booted her up. The touchpad is as good and better than any other. I did buy the wireless microsoft mouse and I also recommend it. Wireless N shows 150 mb/s for me and I get full signal with a netgear wndr3300 throughout my house.

The ONLY problem I could imagine, unless you're a tool and think not having xp is a problem, is that the screen can be glossy. Doesn't bother me though. Otherwise, plug the HDMI into a plasma 50 inch or something and watch the 5730 ati really tear it up! Pull the trigger.... Buy it.

"Great Laptop for the Money!" 2010-03-19

By Steven Seagraves Jr. (Huntsville, AL)

I ordered this laptop about a month ago and have been very impressed with both the performance and the look/feel of the notebook. This is my first ASUS after bailing off of the HP bandwagon for the last few years. The slim design and light weight package are very attractive. The keyboard gives a nice resistance when typing (almost as if it has some kind of magical 'type-assist'#....as well as plenty of space between the keys. The other comments regarding resolution are somewhat right, depending on what you're doing with it. The Video Magic software from ASUS allows for enhancement for videos, and I've been impressed with the output. The only disappointment would be if you do a lot of work in PS CS4...the resolution isn't the best for fine-tuning high-res photos. Not really a big deal.

The only other downside is that my webcam is upside down. Jeers to ASUS for not yet addressing this problem with this model on their website. I used a 3rd Party workaround and it seems to work now #in most cases#.

Otherwise, great speed....loaded CS4 in under 30 minutes and it boots Photoshop CS4 in under 10 seconds, twice as fast as my duo core HP.

Overall, for the price, this laptop is hands-down a GREAT value.

 "Fantabulous" 2010-03-16

By M. Binbek

So I bought this Laptop in January, at the time it's features were unrivaled by any other vendor. One of the first I7 and 5 series gpu's lay before my eyes. I promptly sold the dualcore asus I bought in October for the same price and picked this one up and I must say it was well worth it. Dump the bloatware and this thing just what seems to be a limitless about of desktop processing power.

For single threaded apps it overclocks the clock speed to 2.8ghz, for multi-threaded it uses 1.6ghz two threads per core that works wonderfully in windows 7. As for the gpu I regret that I haven't put much on in the way of games, however I saw a notciable improvement in video playback on both it's led screen and my monitor colors just seem more vibrant and the playback is smoother I don't know if this is just because I haven't used an ati card in awhile or no. The only game I have tried was street fighter 4 everything on max with no AA left me with 60fps at the native laptop resolution.

As for the case and screen the the led screen is alright, the viewing angle isn't so good thought it is still backlit I would say my other screen was better in fact. As for the case all around the keyboard and keypad is rubber.. I don't honestly know how I feel about this yet, as for the plastic it's pretty chaep it's a good thing this thing comes with a accidental warranty because I have dropped it in the bag while reaching down for something and it left a mark. :-(

all in all you can't beat what this thing packages anywhere else. USB 3.0, I7 CPU, ati direct x 10 1gb gpu, 4gb ram upgradable to 8gb, bluetooth, wireless n. What more can you ask for? Other than ati to upgrade their mobile drivers! ^_^ well worth the price.

 "good purchase" 2010-03-14

By A. Lam (Los Angeles, CA USA)

You won't find any laptop better for $970 without tax. I've searched high and low for the best one and this is what I got.

Pros:

Very strong graphics card, fairly new (couple months old), can handle new games easy

Very quiet, you might think a disc tray may make noise but I assure you it's quiet

Extremely fast, quad core i7, 7200rpm HDD, 4gb ddr3 ram

Great viewing angles for LED screen

VERY good quality built-in microphone, most laptops built-in mics are terrible

Numpad

Cons:

ATI drivers suck, need 3rd party programs to get into advance settings (unlike nvidia)

Base idle heat of about 60, which is kinda high. But expected for a quad core i7.

Somewhat low height of resolution for a 16" screen.

Alot of useless ASUS bloatware

Wish the numpad was a little bigger

Overall the best you could get for the price, you won't find anything near this systems specs for this price.

"NICE SPECS PROBLEMS DON'T CALL ASUS" 2010-03-13

By David Willis (Fort McCoy, FL.)

After a very bad experience with an Asus N10Jh-A1 and due to Asus having a good reputation for laptops- a second unit was tried, the N61Jq-X1 (A1 is same except for having 2 year warranty). Amazon has changed it's ad for this laptop since our company purchased this unit, as it does not have the TV grade, additional amplifier and cone speakers etc, which was advertised. Asus website still has these features listed, including a really nice video touting their laptop. Simply doesn't exist on N61Jq units.

Turned the laptop on for the first time, providing name /date/time, password and reached the create the System Restore DVD's (four required)part of setup. Inserted first new DVD disc and a half hour later, this laptop Blue Screened, BSOD, on SETUP. When finally back at the point of doing the Restore discs for second time, the second attempt to do Disc #1, few minutes later another error box and BSOD again. This is going well. Now on third attempt to do Disc #1 which started at 26% ?? and later, FOUR hours later, the four dvd backup discs are finished. Don't expect I could trust these discs to Restore anything. Day Two: ASUS was sent all the technical stuff (codes and information beyond my technical expertise, hoping only to provide Asus with information to fix the problem, OR be able to find out it's not repairable, information easily found using Windows 7 which I believe is the best thing Microsoft has done in some time and gasp! might even be better than XP. Four separate emails and tech numbers from Asus later, the Asus techs are still talking about SRS drivers and issues nothing to do with BSOD. Since initial setup, the unit in the past three weeks BSOD two more times while watching two movies from internet. Interesting only for having nothing to do with DVD drive in unit. The N61Jq-X1 as of yesterday is on it's way back to Amazon. Going to purchase a Sony VPC-F111FX/H or if Amazon takes forty days to credit the N61 like they did the N10, will order one directly from Sony.

 "Exactly As Advertised" 2010-03-24

By JM (Honolulu, HI.)

At half the price of a Mac Book I couldn't be more pleased with my new Asus Ul30a. It's sleek, light, and fast. I'm just an average computer user and was impressed at how easy the notebook was to set up and begin using. The built in wireless works flawlessly for connecting to wifi networks and I was unexpectedly impressed with Windows 7 (I expected to hate it!). The most impressive thing about the Asus (besides the light weight) is that the battery life is indeed 7+ hours. This notebook pretty much does everything they claim it will as advertised which is a refreshing experience for me. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a nice notebook at a fantastic price.

"Excellent laptop, and works really well with Ubuntu 9" 2010-03-24

By Kevin Hutchinson (Puerto Escondido, Mexico)

I already own a Samsung NC10 and an Apple MacBook (the old black version) and was looking for something in between - faster than the NC10 and lighter than the MacBook, essentially a very portable (thin and light) 13" laptop that I could use to work on Ubuntu (dual boot) as well as Windows 7 for iTunes, movies, Kindle book reader, etc. At first I considered buying the more expensive "Vt" versions with dual video cards (native Intel and dedicated Nvidia) but I opted for this more basic laptop with the Intel graphics and it's been a really pleasant surprise. Movies and YouTube look great (no jitters), and Ubuntu runs with all its extra visual effects. The screen is very glossy and bright and fine for outdoor use, the 500GB disk is large enough to dual boot Ubuntu and also carry a copy of your iTunes library, and the 4GB RAM is more than I'm ever likely to need.

Unlike other reviewers I have not found the keyboard to be bouncy or have any unwanted travel - in fact it's nicer than my old Apple MacBook keyboard. Also, I really love the trackpad and find the 2-finger scrolling to be exactly like my Apple laptop (except it could do with being a tiny bit less sensitive). I'm getting about 6 hours of battery life but I'm not using any energy-saving features. For me 6 hours is enough, but if you need more then check out the "Vt" models which include 5600mAh batteries, e.g. the ASUS UL30Vt-X1 which also includes Bluetooth. (I guess not having Bluetooth is a bit of a pain for cellphone connectivity).

I also love the multi-card reader which works fine with both my Sony Cybershot and my Canon Sureshot cameras. This is a real benefit because I don't need to travel with all those USB cables.

All in all, I'm super-happy with this laptop and expect to be using it for work and play for at least the next 2 years. Awesome!

"I am loving this computer!" 2010-03-20

By K. Bolinsky (Mississippi)

I am not a gamer, so made the financial decision to purchase the X5 rather than the A1 because I didn't need the enhanced graphics capabilities.

This is a very attractive, eye-catching unit: I receive compliments every time I open it in public.

It's fast, it's quiet, it has VERY long battery life, and it does what it's supposed to do.

Caveats: Yes, it is a fingerprint magnet -- there isn't a surface you can touch on which you won't leave a print or smudge. But it cleans as easily as it smudges. Yes, the screen does have a limited viewing angle. But how often do you change your vertical position while using a computer. Yes, it does come with an enormous amount of pre-installed software. But it does give you the option of reformatting the hard drive to remove partitions and only install what you want.

There is no reason to complain about the trackpad -- it's easy to use and works like a charm.

So far, then, so good. I've owned laptop and notebook computers from Tandy, IBM, Dell, Toshiba, and Fujitsu -- this is my first Asus.

 "Cheap and no good" 2010-03-20

By BoBo

I was so excited to get this laptop. I read all the reviews, all the major tech sites rated this laptop high. When I got the laptop I was so disappointed.

Keyboard: Cheap and made too much noise. It was so flexible I thought I was going to break it.

Screen: You are not going to be able to see what's on the screen at any angle. Way too much glare, I don't understand how there could be this much glare on a plastic screen.

Touch mouse pad: Hands down the worst touch pad I have ever used. You can't tell when your finger slips off the pad because of the lack of texture. The gestures just don't work, in fact they make things worse, I had to turn them off.

Finger Prints: I was so happy to get a laptop that was covered in aluminum. I thought that the aluminum would be resistant to fingerprints like the Macbooks. I was so so very wrong. The outside of the Asus is a fingerprint magnet, the inside was full of cheap glossy plastic. It got disgusting dirty after light use. Cheap cheap cheap. Why can't any laptop maker other then some of the Sony's products and Apple make a laptop that doesn't look like you dropped a bottle of grease on it after picking it up. Where the heck did all of this glossy plastic come from!!!!

Unless you absolutely have to have a laptop with super battery life (as in you won't be by a single outlet for 6 hours) I would stay away far away...

I miss my IBM thinkpad T41.... :( IBM can you please get back into the hardware business...

 "could be better" 2010-03-22

By blizard (Hollidaysburg, PA USA)

This was my first LCD purchase so I was really excited. Unfortunately mine arrived with a stuck pixel. The pixel is green so is very visible whenever image is dark. It is pretty near center so quite annoying. I have tried the things recommended online to fix it (pixel unsticking software, gentle massaging/tapping, spot pressure cycling on/off) with no luck. I have given up as don't want to make things worse. I learned that Tigerdirect, who is the Amazon seller, requires you to first contact manufacturer for a return, and maufacturer's normal policy is at least (5) bad pixels before will consider. So looks like I am gonna have to learn to live with this darn stuck green pixel. Not happy. Concerning the rest of the monitor. The size is awesome. The overally image quality is good once you turn down the brightness and contrast (I use theater mode). Response is fast. Working the buttons is a pain; location is poor and the menu navigation is not user-friendly. The monitor in my opinion has a "cheap" feel. If I could do again would buy another brand (maybe Samsung, LG or Viewsonic?). I am glad most of you are happy. A guy online said he purchases monitors from brick and mortar retail outlets so can check out before purchase and easily return if a problem. This seems like good advice whick I will keep in mind for next time.

 "Great Monitor for PS3" 2010-03-12

By Rakesh Sikdar (New York City, NY USA)

I am a student living in a small apartment with a lower budget to spend on my "occasional bursts" of gaming. Therefore a large screen LCD HDTV was out of the question. I was aspiring to build a desktop for my work purpose, which involves quite a bit of protein modeling and computational analysis - a great incentive to buy a large LCD monitor. Therefore I needed a monitor which will be working mostly with my desktop but during my "entertainment time" would play well with gaming consoles and provide me with cheap but quality HD display entertainment. I searched all around the internet for a cheap LCD monitor which supports full HD and works with PS3 but there was none which was "confirmed" to work flawlessly with a PS3. I went ahead and bought this Asus monitor based on its glowing reviews in conjunction with its low price. This is a great, great buy. With Zero Dead pixels, excellent contrast and black levels, preset quality modes, great crisp color, this was the perfect display for my small room. The large display real estate is great whether I am working or whether I am gaming or watching movies. And did I say that it works PERFECTLY with my PS3 120 GB Slim. Watching "Casino Royale" and "The Dark Knight" on BD in PS3 was a treat to the eyes as was playing "Uncharted 2" and "Killzone 2". The one-press HDMI/VGA/DVI switch allows me to keep both my running PC and PS3 simultaneously connected to the display and switch on the fly between my work and entertainment. I am very satisfied with this display from Asus !!! If you are looking for a LCD monitor for your PS3, look no further and buy this product straight up -- you will not be disappointed with this.

I bought this package from Brilliant Store Inc. I don't have a comment for reliability and durability. I bought it for $13.50. The packaging and Shipment were great. This free shipping package arrived in two days. This package came with a CD, but the CD is for window 98. For window 2000 and XP, it will do plug and play by itself. So there is no need for the CD. I did not install anything. I plug it into my 900HA Asus eee, and it just recognized and installed by itself. It took about a minute. I did not do anything. Then, I tested it out by installing Turbo tax. It worked great. Thank you to both Brilliant Store & Amazon. BTW, I had the Asus eee 900HA window XP for about a year, and it is still working great.

 "Universal adapter" 2010-03-23

By Sarah Schow (Utah, USA)

The adapter is great except that it doesn't fit my ASUS as well as I'd like. It will only charge if the cord is held at a certain angle while plugged in as it is a loose fit.

 "Lasted 2 months..." 2010-03-19

By twitch's mom (virginia beach)

Purchased in early January and needed a replacement by first week in March. Loved the price point compared to purchasing in-store, but seems expensive now if it only will work for 2 months.

 "No complaints" 2010-03-17

By R. Mack (Toledo, Ohio)

Thank you, I purchased this for my daughter's laptop about two weeks ago. I gave it to her and next thing, I here is music playing. She stayed on that laptop a long time. She has no complaints. I didn't have to help her figure it out and she's only 14 yrs old. So far, so good. Thank you again, because I really didn't want to spend $75 dollars or more for the exact one.

 "Excellent" 2010-03-15

By

The item was shipped immediately and arrived within a few days. The effectiveness of this company can not be doubted, and I personally applaude them for that.

The only problem I have with the item is that it worked for all my other laptop computers except the one I actually bought it for. But I guess it is not the fault of this company, since their package was complete.

"Not a bad little machine!" 2010-03-24

By Scott Jung (Dublin, CA)

I was a PC user, then became a Mac user for the past four years in college, and now this netbook is my first entry back into Windows PC's (call me an Anakin Skywalker I guess...). I needed this netbook for a overseas trip to a third-world country, and the EeePC, with its long battery life and its reputation as the first netbook, seemed to be a good fit. After a couple days of use, here are my initial thoughts:

AESTHETICS: not the most attractive notebook. It has a nice, glossy black shell, which not only is a fingerprint magnet, but it's the type of plastic that creates a bit of friction between it and your finger if it's a little sweaty

BUILD: probably the worst part. It's not terrible, but after handling it, I feel more inclined to want to get a case for it now. The shell is fairly sturdy with just a very slight amount of flex. The hinge isn't as strong as I thought it would be. The keyboard is solid, but has some flex that's uneven, so the the area around the F G H keys sound different than the other keys.

PERFORMANCE: fairly zippy...after removing the pre-installed bloatware. Asus is actually good at keeping the bloatware lower than most PC manufacturers as most of the programs were system utilities, as opposed to games and other completely useless crap that HP puts on their systems. Unfortunately, I know that with most Windows PC's, as this computer ages, it will slow down to a crawl.

OPERATING SYSTEM: utter crap! Windows 7 is not bad at all, but their "Starter" version is no good. As I type, I'm upgrading to Windows 7 Professional. I recommend you do the same or go with a Linux distro.

HARDWARE: Battery: battery life is amazing! This machine boasts 14 hours, and while it hasn't been exactly 14 hours, 11 hours is still pretty darned good. That still beats the iPad's (touted) 10 hours, and blows every other netbook clear out of the water! Webcam: typical webcam, seemed to do decent in low light. I haven't tried Skyping yet though. Connectivity: as expected. Nothing really special, although I kind of wish they gave you HDMI or Mini DVI or DisplayPort rather than VGA. Screen: it's small, but it's bright and responsive. Asus claims a no dead-pixel policy, and so far I don't see any. Insides: I don't quite understand why Asus partitioned the hard drive into two partitions. There's a 100GB partition that Windows is on and an empty 122GB partition. One for WIndows and programs and one for documents, music, and pictures perhaps?

Overall, I'm fairly pleased so far. I think the battery life is what really sets this netbook apart from the rest. The rest of the features are fairly standard for netbooks as of right now, and I've read Asus has bumped up its technology in the new line of Eee PC's that have already been announced. But if you're looking for a netbook now, I'd recommend this one!

 "First impressions after 24 hours....Eee 1005PE" 2010-03-20

By BoomerGal50 (Chesapeake Bay)

Overall it's a nice little computer. I've had small Toshibas and Fujitsus before and this is the ideal travel size. When I first started it up, it said it was initializing for so long that I thought something was hung up. I went online to research the problem and when I came back it had opened Windows. I am still trying to figure out how to put my own desktop background on it, there are posts from people who have done that. As far as it being a fingerprint magnet, that really doesn't both me so much, but I would recommend that Asus take the person who designed that out back and give them a good spanking! Matte would be so much easier to deal with. I purchased this from Amazon and while some buyers of Asus netbooks say they received a protective sleeve and a cloth to keep the little unit shiny, my box contained neither. Jury is still out on battery life. I have a Blackberry so I bought the Tether software, installed it on the Asus and the BB and was able to surf the web on the Asus using my Blackberry...now that is cool.

"Great netbook. Crucial memory upgrade works for my needs." 2010-03-19

By Chris B. Hirner

This is my second netbook. The first was the Msi wind so for me to give up that awesome 2nd generation net-book took quite a bit. The asus build quality is just great, no flex or creaking. The keyboard is a dream to type on. But this is just a repeat of most other positive reviews. So ill get to the point of this review.

The Crucial memory upgrade, I purchased the Crucial 800mhz module for the 2 gb upgrade. It works great, however when on power saving mode it won't fully shut down. I have tested this with the original 1 gig of memory and found that on occasion the PC wouldn't shut down properly with that memory either. I think its a super hybrid engine problem, not a memory problem. On high performance and super performance it shuts down just fine. That's fine in my case because i don't use the power saving anyhow. It's too laggy. Even on high performance the battery still lasts more than 10 hours so I'm good to go. I am running the newest bios 0901 and still the shutdown problem persists for those looking to squeak out as much life as possible from their battery. Otherwise the performance is much improved with 2 gigs of memory. There is room to cache now. With 1 gig it took firefox about 12 seconds to start up. Now that windows superfetch has some room to breath it starts in under 3 seconds. Video performance has improved as well.

So in conclusion, do the upgrade its worth it. I'm sure Asus will upgrade the bios eventually to make shutdowns perfect in all settings.

Ill update as new bios versions are released.

Update. I didn't think originally that i would care for windows 7 starter. It's a little bland looking and the windows animation is not as smooth. Plus aero peek doesn't show the page just a link to it. But after using it for a week or so i decided not to upgrade it, because the upgrade to home premium might make it look better but the added functionality is not really worth 79 dollars. I can play dvds on mine with vlc, heck after installing vlc and ac3 decoder i can watch dvds with windows media player. Media center was not necessary either i can watch my recorded tv shows from my desktop computer on media player with no problems right over the network. And as for homegroup simplified networking, I never found a use for it anyway. I guess im just a user level security kind of guy.

Just a note, asus has a utility to change the background. Just do a little hunting and you'll find it in no time.

So in conclusion give starter a chance, it works just fine.

 "Awesome Battery" 2010-03-18

By Brian Hunt (SE, ID)

We bought this for its battery life. My wife uses it for college assignments and note taking she can use it all day on a single charge and still have plenty left over when she gets home. Its a great netbook very light and after we added another 1GB of ram its very responsive.

"Recommended for Students and Mobile Professionals!" 2010-03-18

By John

My brother is looking for a laptop right now. And I told him what I'm going to tell you. This computer is a steal. Everything about my big, bulky, 7-pound, 2 hours of battery life, Gateway laptop that bothers me is resolved in this nice, neat package. Here are the pros:

* Fantastic "chiclet" keyboard (very responsive, great size)

* Very light (hardly notice the difference having it in my backpack)

* PHENOMENAL battery life (more than I ever need for a given day)

* Fast processor, very responsive to Windows 7 operating system

* All applications run smoothly (including Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate)

The only thing that has bothered me so far is that it doesn't have a built-in CD drive. Opting to download newly purchased software is one way around this. Otherwise a $60 external drive will solve this problem as well.

My teachers and classmates keep asking me about this computer, and I tell them all the same thing. This is by far the best purchase I have made in a long time. I use it as my mobile machine and keep my files synced to my home machine using ZumoDrive. If I could go back and buy it again, I would do it in a heartbeat.
