 "Double the Entertainment" 2009-09-05
By Renda Romanus (Beautiful Alabama)
I purchased this for my daughter to use on the trips she makes. She has twins and this has been perfect. It was very easy to hook up and the twins are able to watch their favorite movies while on long trips or even short excursions.

The "monitors" are very easy to put in place and remove so you can take the items inside instead of leaving them in the car. The actual "player" is good at playing movies and does well even on bad roads (ie bumpy, etc). Color and picture quality are very good on this.

 "don't buy this!" 2009-04-14
By Morgan M. Kienitz (Munising, MI)
We bought this a month ago to go on a short trip with our family. We had played probably 4 movies and it quit working. We did nothing wrong to cause it to quit. The screen just went blank. We have tried contacting Polaroid but they don't answer and they don't call you back. What a terrible company for customer service! Of course the company who we bought it from (on Amazon) and shipped it to us says we need to contact the manfacturer so they won't do anything either. What a waste of $160!!!!

"Loss of star due to 90-day warantee" 2009-03-29
By V. Nicholson (Greensboro, NC)
I actually bought this product two christmases prior when it was closer to $200 and came with the game player also.

While the performance is awesome when I had a problem with the volume somehow being set to mute that we could not get back on for over 6mths I discovered Polaroid was more than willing to sell be a new one[keep in mind it's not 9mths old]at almost the same price I had originally paid rather than fix it. This is when I discovered the warranty was 90days.

So while it seemed like a good value for the quality Polaroid failed to provide both.

Fortunately, I did not give up trying to figure out what was wrong and eventually a musician and soundman friend figured it out and we have them installed in the car again.

"Definitely not "new" - missing connecting AV cable, broken strap handle" 2009-03-28
By Ann M. Vasko (Apex, NC)
I ordered this through amazon and the distributor - Discount Jungle, which listed it as "New". It is definitely not new. The connecting AV cable which is used to power the second screen is not the right size, the metal piece that holds the back strap for the screen is busted, and there are scratches all over the monitor. I've called customer support at Discount Jungle, I will be surprised if I hear anything back.

Will never order from this seller again.

"You'd be very wise to opt for the extended warranty..." 2009-01-22
By D. Smith (Tucson, AZ)
The Polaroid DPA-07051B is a rehash of their older 7" dual screen DVD players for your car / van, except this model does not come with a video game unit. The unit is OK, but it seems the concept of "quality electronic workmanship" (we're definitely not talking about IPC-A-610 Class C - highest electronic workmanship standards) typically isn't a philosophy associated most Polaroid electronics - so buyer beware (this is my second unit I've purchased within two years, so I opted for the extended warranty at Walmart this time, and the second unit is starting to have intermittent problems). The poor quality of the product why I rated it so poorly (the Polaroid brand of portable DVD players only seem to last less than one year, and then fail for no apparent reason).

The spaghetti of cables and wires you need to use to connect both monitors (one is the player, the other is only a LCD monitor) between the chairs may be annoying to some. If you're in a car or extended cab truck, it's not a big deal, but those with a van might be annoyed with the wiring. The unit comes with a remote, but you really don't need it...unless you're attempting to input a "region free" hack (won't go into that, but you can do the Google search to learn of the four digit code...if you know one code for any Polaroid unit, you know them all).

Polaroid DVD players are pretty much targeted to two types of consumers: 1. Those who want a cheap DVD player (and really don't care about the quality or the cost)

2. Those who need a DVD player that's easy to hack, and need to convert it into an affordable region-free DVD player, and are willing to take a gamble on the quality of the product (if they opt for an extended warranty).

****

Update 1/26/09

You almost want to forget about calling customer support (1-866-590-3568), as rarely anyone will answer the phone - let alone call you back. Expect to have to pay to ship the DVD players to Polaroid for servicing. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. If they initially cheaped-out on making the players, they are definitely going to pass on any expense to their customers who need support.

"No Problems with this Item" 2009-05-12
By F. Nava (Texas USA)
I got this camcorder a few years ago and have never had a problem...in fact, I'm quite surprised at all the negative reviews and bad experiences.

Maybe I'm just naive, as this was my first and only DVD camcorder so far. I'm not sure about all the features on other products, but I've gotten so used to this camera that it has never been a problem (however, after reading these reviews, I'm knocking on wood!).

True, the DVD recording time is not long. True, you have to finalize discs before you take them out. True, you can only finalize through an AC outlet. But for the most part, this camera has served my needs. I guess if you are looking for something more elaborate, you can get something else. But this item works well and serves its purpose.

"Hitachi DZ-BX35A DVD Video Camera and Recorder" 2009-05-08
By D. Cox
BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE! This recorder work great for a few days but gave me a disk error on the 4th day. I lost everything from that day because it would not finalize the disk. So maybe it was the disk (trying benefit of the doubt). However now it stays stuck on `DISS ACCESS'. I called Hitachi and was told I have to go to St Louis to get it fixed. I live in Kansas. I ask to make a complaint and was given the run around. They need to open a file, they asked A LOT of questions regarding my address, full name, numbers, etc (not all actually needed to get an address so I can write a complaint letter. Then I get transferred to a rude woman (I wasn't even told I was getting transferred) who tells me there are only 6 authorized businesses who can work on the camera because they go through intensive training. This does not change anything about me trying to make a complaint. She said she would make a note of this. HA! I then asked for a confirmation number, she went crazy - assuring me the complaint would be taken care of. (Sure!). She finally gave me a case number. I told her I was going to call back to check if it was really a case number attached to this situation. This pushed her over the edge. The call did not end well and I did call back to find Hitachi's notes on this situation were few and more about me being a problem instead of the camera. BEWARE!

"YOU WILL LOSE PRECIOUS MOMENTS!!!!!!!!!!" 2009-01-05
By shopper24
I have had off and on again problems with hitachi hybrid, and now the dvd will not eject disc and i can't access dvd mode. I have many discs that were not finalized(which means no playback!!!!!) Plus almost every time I recorded onto disc, I had disc error, and had to stop recording and repair, and missed many special moments. DO NOT BUY!!!!!

UPDATE: Recieved new hitachi hybrid, and STILL SAME PROBLEM!!!!!!At first it worked, and I thought maybe first camcorder was a lemon, but here we go again!!!!!! I lost the 2nd half of my kids birthday party, the best parts, the opening of gifts, the pinata, the cousins all playing together, some very funny, great moments, ALL LOST because halfway through recording onto HDD mode, I get a message "repair data now or images will be deleted". By the time I repair the dang thing, the moment is gone.........SO DISAPPOINTED. Sending back. I've learned the hard way, 2 things.....#1always have back up for those "priceless" moments......and #2 Its better to not even bother with an unreliable camcorder/camera during those special moments, because you'll become so distracted with the camcorder/camera, that you'll miss out on just ENJOYING and taking in the moment.

"Buy carefully -- this camera may be TROUBLE!" 2008-09-04
By Hathaway Brown (Adventurers Club)
I can't believe this camera has been so highly-rated. This camera wasted lots of my time recording important events and then was unable to reliably "finalize" my discs for display on my DVD players. I recorded 5 brand-new discs at an event last night, everything seemed fine, and then later that night two of the five discs failed to finalize and gave messages about the discs being corrupted or unreadable. The only options were to fix the problems by re-formatting the discs and permanently losing contents of two of the discs. (That's a 40% rate of loss!) I used the recommended Maxell DVD-RW discs to avoid exactly this sort of problem and still got very poor results. In advance of a big vacation in two weeks I'm going out to shop for another camera tonight. DON'T BUY THIS CAMERA unless you TEST THOROUGHLY in advance of your vacation or special event. I may have a lemon, but this could be the current state of Hitachi quality and performance. It may also be a problem inherent in recording to mini-DVDs. All I know is that I am very frustrated after following all directions and instructions carefully. I lost some important video memories when I used this camera and I'm not letting it happen on my big vacation in two weeks.

"A beginner's view: Having a great experience with this camcorder so far" 2008-03-27
By Beledi Explorer (Madison, WI)
I purchased this Hitachi DZ-BX35A DVD Camcorder at a clearance price on the spur-of-the-moment one day prior to my departure to Egypt for a 2 week Holiday. The clearance price was $149 and I figured the worst case was that I'd get some video images from our trip and I'd learn a bit about camcorders and be better educated for a future purchase when the prices drop for the HD flash memory models. Despite the quick purchase decision, I did attempt a bit of background research on DVD camcorders and this Hitachi model in particular. Because we would not have access to a computer during our travels, the DVD models seemed a good bet as I could take along a supply of discs and do the transfers later on return home. On checking reviews of this model at some of the online camcorder sites I saw several reviewers who totally panned this model giving it very low ratings across all aspects of its performance. This almost disuaded me from buying but then I noticed one comment on one of the reviews noting that the reviewers were comparing this to $500-800 models. He noted that he was a beginner and was happy so far. The $149 price was too much to resist so I went back and bought the Hitachi and 6 DVD+RW discs the day prior to my departure. I could not find the highly rated Maxell disks and bought Sony instead. They have worked fine. They play on my computer DVD player as well as on my home theatre DVD player.

So with that prelude, how has it worked? I am totally satisfied so far (but recognize this is my first experiecne recording any kind of video). I suspect some of my quibbles are common to many camcorders - for example, the 100x zoom is great (even astonishing) but you have to learn to control the speed of the zoom and a tripod or some camera support is almost essential at the longer focal lengths. In the bright sun wearing sunglasses, I found the view finder virtually impossible to use; the LCD display was usable but very hard to see any detail. The focus seems to lag a bit sometimes while panning on objects at different distances. Battery life seemed adequate and the ability to run the camera in the hotel off the DC cord was helpful for reviewing the prior day's shooting, formatting disks, etc. The AC adapeter worked fine on either 110 or 220V. Again, speaking as a beginner with nothing else to compare it to the image quality seems fine for a 640x480 resolution and played on my 42" plasma with adequate resolution. Some of clips I shot seemed to be a bit off on the color rendition and some in the Egyptian desert sun were kind of wahsed out (but then again it was incredibly bright out there).

My only complaint at this point is with the power switch - its too easy to accidentally turn on or off. There is supposedly a lock button but on my model it does not seem to work. This is mainly worrisome regarding the time it take the camera to write the images just shot onto the disk.

Some minor stuff: the menus seem a bit awkward to use and the still photo option records only to an SD card at only 1.3 megapixzels but this is not unique to Hitachi models. Overall, I am delighted with this camera so far and have found a an excellent learning experience.

"Not good for battery operated use" 2009-09-14
By DR ROY MAYHUGH (SACRAMENTO, CA USA)
I have two players, a Sony and this Dynex. I wouldn't recommend the Dynex for battery operation. The battery on mine won't hold any charge. It works fine as long as I plug it in to an AC outlet. I've tried charging it for a full day and it won't hold a charge. If you're looking for one that operates on batteries, I recommend you check out the Sony players.  "Initial plays CD+G (karaoke) format disks" 2009-09-22

I like these 'Initial' dvd players because they play CD+G (karaoke) format disks; most other brands do not (Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic do not play CD+G). I own three Initial dvd players. The most recent Initial model 1731 dvd player arrived broken from seller DiscountJungle. Kudos to DiscountJungle for responding promptly and sending a prepaid shipping label for the return. I have usually had good luck with Initial; so I recommend this product and DiscountJungle.

When I first purchased this portable DVD player I was quite pleased with it. The picture was clear and the sound came thru nicely. However, after just 6 months of use, it just stopped working. It keeps telling me "no disc". It has only been used by my daughter while sitting in the car so it has not been dropped or abused in anyway.

Now I know why it was on sale. I won't buy this brand again.

"Like the Energizer Bunny!!! Keeps going...." 2006-08-28
By Pam H. (Fredericksburg, VA)
Bought this 3-4 years ago before Portable DVD players became really popular. (I paid like $250+ for it.) It has taken a beating from my 3 yr old..kicking it many, many times, dropping it, etc. and it just keeps going. We mostly use it in the van, but also use the plug in adapter once in awhile. We've never used the battery. It has never skipped (only if the DVD is dirty so not a player problem). The only problem we are having right now is we need a new car adapter and will order one. I bought a second player for my older DD so she can watch her own movies (a Panasonic-only because it was really cheap) so I hope that one lasts just as long. I basically just use mine in the car. There were times that it didn't cut on, but I never power it off so what we do is turn the power button off and then back on and it's good to go. We really got our money's worth.

"Large Footprint Player with great picture" 2004-12-20
By G. Ellingsworth (NJ)
The samsung 10" player is a wonderful device, although it does tend to have a short battery life. The sound of the player is rich and full. I wanted to use the player in my car (not for me, for my passengers) but still haven't been able to find a DC adapter. The battery life is ok, so for shorter trips it works. I paid full price for mine, but recently found that it was being offered for free as part of a referral service at http://www.pvps4free.com/default.aspx?r=120107 - No matter how you get this player it is definitely a quality item.

This is one of those DVD players with big screens. The screen is the perfect size, and is very thin. The remote is easy to use. It also has the ability to play Cd's of different formats.

It also kind of looks like a sharper image portable stereo. only, it's a DVD. Sharper image sells it. It has one of the biggest screens, so it's very easy to use, therfore making it a easy view DVD player. With these great features, This is one of The best DVD players on the market.

By
Someone wrote the new model only runs 1 hour longer than the previous model and no memory slot, I don't care about the memory slot but battery life, thats a huge deal if you like long movies.
Another says it dosen't remember where you left off, mine does. My Panasonic which is being replaced by this one remembered only on certain discs where the L200 has no problems like that.
Another writes that they have to go through all kinds of button pushes to get rid of the closed captioning or sub titles, If you look at the remote there's a button for subtitle on it. Just click it and select no. Yeah there should be a option to disable CC besides the disc menu.
Won't remember your 4X3 screen settings? just hit the EZ View button and it automatically sets up the proper screen setup for widescreen and pan scan programming.
I would give it 5 stars but there is no brightness or contrast control, even though it has a excellent picture I still want to tweak the image.

Just received this pack and tested it. It lasted about 4 1/2 hours on my Insignia 7" portable dvd player. I'm not sure if it holds up over time but other players seem to be much more expensive and then not live up to their promised performance (some claim 8-12 hours). This pack said 2.5 to 6 hours and delivered 4 1/2 hours on my player, seems to be well in the range of what was promised. I'll probably pick up a few more for long trips.

We have an Initial 7" portable DVD player which we have misplaced the battery charger to. A year ago, I couldn't find a replacement in a pinch for a flight back home, so I made do with books and toys for my toddler. For Thanksgiving, I found this universal battery JUST in time for our family's flight back home. Kids were completely silent the whole trip. Perfect for a 2 1/2 hour flight, not sure about anything longer than that. Instructions were easy, not too many parts, but you do have to make sure you have all parts - KEEP IN SAFE PLACE. :)
