Couldn't get drive to burn disks. It might just be defective--it does make a loud, grinding noise at times that definitely doesn't sound right. But I also noted in one or more of the earlier reviews someone saying the drive wouldn't burn disks when it was powered by USB only but that it was okay because you could "plug it in" and then it would work. The message I get when I try to burn a disc doesn't reference a lack of sufficient power but, rather, suggests that I am not using a functional disk. I assumed, based on the earlier reviews, that the drive came with a power cord. However, mine did not. I thought that perhaps the power cord was just missing, but I looked at "Package Contents" on the box, and it did not mention any power adaptor or power cord. There is a reference in the manual to the fact that the drive might not work on USB power alone in which case you have to buy a power adapter that conforms to the product's technical specs. I certainly wasn't expecting that. As far as I'm concerned, a product should come with whatever equipment is necessary to perform the basic functions for which it was purchased. The product manual is not helpful in troubleshooting. In fact, it is so slim on information that you can't even determine, from reading the manual, the direction that the disk goes in. I had to figure that out from looking at the picture on the box. The USB cord is odd, too--there are TWO USB plugs--one piggy-backed to the other. According to the manual, you have to plug both in. I've never had an electrical device that had to be plugged into TWO USB ports on a computer at the same time. It's possible that if I went out and found a compatible power cord, I might be able to get the drive to work. However, since I don't know if that's the problem combined with the fact that it makes a funny noise--and my strong conviction that the product should work the way it comes without having to go out and buy more stuff--I am giving up and returning it. I hope others have better luck than me. I think this may be the first product I've ever returned on Amazon--after years of regular purchases.

I bought this for use with my Mac Book Pro, when the onboard drive on my Mac went kaput. I've been satisfied with it, and it manages to do everything I need, though it is a little bit finicky.
Unlike others, I haven't been able to get this to run reliably on USB power - it will receive a disk on USB power, but won't always be able to play it and never can burn onto a disk while running on USB power. That's okay, because you can plug it in, and that's what I do every time now.
Anyhow, I've watched dvds, played cds, installed software, burned dvds and cds from this drive, and all of them work just fine and as advertised. Every once in a while I find that when I insert a disk it will spit it back out at me, and then I have to wait and try again, sometimes a few times, before it will take the disk and mount it. I don't know what that's about, and am tempted to return this for a replacement, but I am overall happy with this brand. It has, for now, solved all of the problems I needed to solve - since without some kind of disk drive and burner, the Mac Book Pro would be pretty seriously incapacitated.

I've had mine for a about a month and so far its been fantastic. Contrary to what some others have said this external will power off a USB with no need for the power cord that is also included

I bought this DVD drive a couple of days ago. It arrived promptly and I was excited to use it as I had just purchased an Acer Aspire One which does not have a CD/DVD drive. After opening the packaging, taking it out, and reading the instructions, I thought I had made a purchasing mistake. The directions say that the AC adapter must be plugged in for the drive to operate. I plugged just the drive into my computer without the AC adaptor and the drive worked perfectly fine. If you're looking for a DVD external drive that runs right off your USB port, this product is an outstanding choice. It seems sturdy and I have had no issues yet. A good buy despite the higher price.

I bought this to replace the failing internal drive on my daughter's MacBook. After extensive research, we could find no documentation whether this drive was Mac compatible or not. The manufacturer does not list the Mac in their compatibility list, and there were no drivers available for it anywhere. We took a chance and, as it turns out, it is fully compatible without the need for any driver. Just plug and play with the Mac.
