 "Works for me" 2009-06-29
By K. Wood (Tallahassee, Florida United States)
I owned one. It worked fine for me. I could use it on the road (I travel a LOT). The docking feature for my iPod was a selleing feature for me.

I never had any problems with it. Output was fine, worked with my 80 GB iPod. I used it at home as my dvd player.

Only drawback was while using it as my dvd player hooked to my TV, the video and sound still came out the device, so I had two sets of sound and video (TV and device.)

Loaned it to someone and it got stolen from them, So I am looking to get another. I never had problems. Sorry to hear otehrs did.

"Philips (DCP850/37) DVD player.. I love it!" 2009-06-16
By NanaMeggie (Eureka, CA USA)
I've had two of these, now... gave the first to my daughter when she went of to college and I now have the second one which I use all the time.

Good points:

1- Obviously, I love being able to dock my iPod with this. One of the advantages with this is the increase in your battery power from a bit over 2 hours (for film) to just about 5 hours as the iPod does use its battery power as well in conjunction with the player's... handy :)

*** A note on the vidoe transfer from iPod to DVD player*** PAY ATTENTION! You must set your iPod VIDEO settings properly before using it in the DVD player so you can see you videos and films properly! It is NOT the fault of the DVD player.

2- Being able to use SD cards for practically any basic music/document/video/photo format there is... music, photos, film, documents.... almost anything which can be stored on an SD card may be viewed provided (naturally) that it is in the appropriate formatting to begin with. In other words, don't expect a Painter or Illustrator doc to be viewable unless it's been coverted to jPeg for the most part.... and text docs should be plaintext only. This is actually a more versatile player than I had originally believed when I really began messing about with it!

3- I LOVE the compactness of the unit and the swivel screen! Turning the screen about makes this more like reading a book, which I like tremendously... terrific for all those boring hours whiling away in the doctor's office and I've even whipped it out while standing in very lengthy check-out lines.

4- I can close the unit altogether and still keep listening to audiobooks on CD... also quite handy, whether they be on CD or stored in my iPod (and I admit to having a huge pile of books stashed on my 'funpod'! Nor did I ever think I'd make use of the second headphone input jack, but lying on the beach (not far from my home) with a friend makes this very handy as well... nice to have the ability to share the entertainment with a friend, especially where external sounds (ocean surf!) necessitates headsets. The screen holds up surprisingly well in the sunlight as well, though of course, no screen is perfect in such conditions.

5- As the unit has AV input/output jacks, this lets me record back and forth as well, not a lot of comparable units have this feature. I don't use it often, but when I need to, generally in sharing music or photos, it's a very handy feature to have.

6- The remote unit is very nice and easy to use and I like the way it is stored in the player as it is not likely to fall out or get easily dislodged when properly inserted into the storage section. The iPod is also securely held when loaded in as there are two separate points of attachment, the power plug and the side "flip" button thingy. It did take me a few tried to get the order right, pull out the plug FIRST, then flip the iPod out of the storage section! Unfortunately, when you do have your iPod loaded, there's no place to store the remote unit within the player itself, so have a pocket handy or, better yet, a storage case for going about with it.

Things I'd change:

1- For some idiotic reason, there's no separate volume control on the remote.. Doesn't make much sense since every other control IS available on it. Perhaps this is something Philips will address in the future. As is, this is the one real complaint, though very minor, is that the only volume control is on the unit itself. On the other hand, just how far away am I ever from the darn thing that I can't reach out and adjust a knob? We are truly getting too lazy!

2- Here's the biggie... the battery... NOT replaceable even though it IS rechargable. Once your battery goes, that's it. I do not know if it can be replaced at the factory or not. BUT... this does NOT mean that the player is toast, you simply just have to use the adapter and use it while it's plugged in. So if this has happened to you, consider hanging on to it to use perhaps in bed while your companion snoozes on... you get to still bliss out with your fave film!

AS far as the non-replacable battery, I really HATE this kind of waste as when I really like something, I'll take good care of it and keep it until it literally falls to bits. The flip side is at least it will continue working just fine plugged in, but of course, that takes the fun of wireless away, doesn't it?

So.... there's my two cents worth... overall, a great little player. versatile, flip screen, 2-5 hours play time depending on iPod usage, compact, plays when closed (for audio CDs, etc) does music, video, DVD, CD, SD, has audio input/outputs, decent and bright screen (16:9 btw!) and overall, offers more than the average. Main downside, non-replaceable battery. That's it. And I'd definitely get the same model player to replace this if something happens to it!

 "So much potential... wasted" 2009-05-20
By NSMaster (Pac NW & Iraq)
I knew someone who had a fully-functioning version of this product and it seemed great and innovative, something that everyone should have... Then I bought my own.

It's an A+ concept and design, but D for delivery.

The i-Pod docking works fine for me, but the battery does not charge, so the DVD player is not portable, which defeats the purpose of a PORTABLE DVD player.

I'll probably give mine away or sell it for a fraction of what it's worth if and when I can.

Such a shame, because I really liked the overall versatility of the product, it just doesn't deliver as it should.

"Looks Good, But Has Limited Options for Playback" 2009-04-13
By M. McCrave (Lenexa, KS)
Received this player for a vacation. Had all my movies loaded to my iPod Classic, but it did not work with the 160Gb Classic. Looking closer at the notes buried in the manual, I saw it only will play the 30, 60 and 80Gb. It also will not play SMHC cards. It looks good, but has limited options for playback. Other than that, it worked fine.

 "Perfect for my needs" 2009-03-22
By Stephen Flores (Seffner, FL USA)
What I needed was a DVD player that played a lot more than DVDs: this is primarily for the car to keep my 1 (now 2) year old son happy on trips. DVDs were getting scratched and would frequently skip/stop with bumps. My wife's 80GB iPod only has about 40GB of music, so we have ripped all of my son's favorite TV shows and movies to the iPod AND the best ones are on 2GB SD memory chips. So no hauling piles of DVDs around. My son can be kept very happy on long trips. The only effort I have to make is ripping new movies and shows to mpeg files.

The screen resolution is not very good, but looks fine for our purposes. But I knocked off a star for that. We almost always have it plugged into the cigarette lighter in the car, so battery life has not been much of an issue for us.

 "does the job" 2009-09-05
By Mr. A. Droulias (Solihull, UK)
Great little DVD player that does the job. Plays all DVDs and was able to watch my movies on my ipod through it. Only problem is that you have to charge it for about 6 hours just to get about 2 hours of play. So avoid those long movies. But we had it in the car for long journeys and plugged it into the car's power outlet so it wasn't too much of an issue for us.

 "only one complaint" 2009-07-27
By J. Morrison (Bladenboro NC USA)
This video player is great in the fact it will play dvd mp3 and such and can even play movies from your sd card or allow you to view pictures or movies from your cameras sd card. Tough as nails and can take a few tumbles down the stairs and being stomped on the car's floorboard.

Ok the downsides.... Cables for the av input/output. Its hard to find a cable to hook to it to allow you to watch on a bigger screen. Been looking online for them and cant find jack-squat. You can make your own. You have to put two tiny little o-rings on your jack (to space it far enough from the unit). Plus the polarity is backward. Where the ground ring is normally on the closest ring to the handle it is now the tip on this hookup. Battery life is 2.5 to 3 hrs and charge time isnt that bad but it only charges when the unit is switched off. The speakers arent really loud enough so I suggest you buy some amplified battery powered speakers if you are on the go or camping out.

But as far as on the go and durablility if I were you I would get this one.

"Fantastic Product but 249$ is Highway Robbery" 2008-11-14
By _ (SAN JOSE, CA United States)
This is a great little player (although the IPod functionality works only for a limited set of IPods; mine is the 30G video Ipod and works great). It has good sound and video, can be played through a regular tv with the supplied A/V cord, and the remote stores in a specially-sized "hole" in the right-hand side (this is where you would place your Ipod to play it). I listen to it at night to help me sleep. It does run a little hot sometimes, and the screen is so bright that even with the lid closed (it plays with the lid closed!) a little light "leaks" out. The screen swivels and can be watched facing UP a la tablet-PC.

However, do not pay 249$ for it. Places which sometimes have them in stock are Walmart, Radio Shack, and JandR.com, to name a few. This listed for around 150$ new.

 "Adequate" 2009-08-30
By Zabba Dabba (WA)
The phillipes portable dvd player is adequate. It does what it's intended to do. I wish it were simpler to setup and that it didn't make you restart the entire movie each time it shuts off. But considering my kids are 1 year and 3 weeks they don't really seem to mind. It does what it's intended to. Could be less expensive for what you're getting.

"Ok DVD, but the car mount is a JOKE" 2009-07-20
By Robert Barnwell (Johnson City, Tennessee)
Okay, I'll admit the player itself works, but the car mount kit is a joke. It all depends on a flimspy plastic hinge that will break as soon as the temperature heats up.

Considering that the included car mount kit was the point of difference that influenced me to buy this device instead of other cheaper options, this is a big deal for me.

To be fair in the nearly two years I've owned it, the dvd has had no problems, but the car mount hinge is not worth the up charge from a more reasonably priced option.

 "Took a beating" 2009-07-08
By KempFam (Milwaukee, WI, United States)
We bought this system for our daughters over two years ago, and it only just failed after receiving a ninja kick from my 2 1/2 year-old. Is it as good as a built in system? Probably not. But it wasn't my daughter's first kick that knocked out the system, it was her hundredth, so we'll be replacing it with another Philips player set. Only complaint, which was stated in other reviews is that the battery covers the car mount point on the back of the player, so you can't charge the battery while it's being watched while mounted in the car. Despite the product advise of "please remove player and mount when not in use", it spent 90% of it's life hooked up in the car, so the battery issue wasn't a frequent problem, but it was an inconvenient one, since it was usually so long between times where I dismounted it, the battery was usually dead anyway. Only other feature I'd love to see is just the seemingly simple ability to hook up an ipod video cable to this system. It would be reeeeeaaaaallly nice to be able to keep the iPod up front, where I can control it, while having its video displayed in back for the kids. DVDs are slowly going the way of the dodo bird, so forward compatibility would be nice. Although, given my daughter's penchant for punishing the poor thing, it probably wouldn't outlive the DVD obsolescence anyway.

 "No-Frills; Just Solid Philips" 2009-08-22
By T. Coleman (Texas)
I spent a lot of time debating between this and a comparably priced Coby with more bells and whistles. I decided to bet on the known Philips quality. I lived some in Europe, where Philips is a much bigger name than here and gained respect for their quality. Haven't had it long enough to attest firmly to its durability; but that's where confidence and "feel" comes in. This feels solid, if you can feel solidity.

It's simple, that's the primary issue, I think. Simple to set up; and it simply works. Pretty intuitive, really. I've seen no problems with running either DVDs or CDs. Picture is excellent. Could use a remote; but that's one of the quality verses bells & whistles you'll need to consider. It does the basics and does them well, except for one thing that I believe is common to all in this price range.

The speakers are tinny and I've already added the Sony SRSM50/WHI Compact, Stylish, Transportable Speaker (White), which is perfect for it. This is not a criticism, really, 'cause these little players all have tinny sound or have given something else up to improve the sound and keep it in the size and price range. This factor is easy to overcome, if you don't like tinny sound. Inexpensive earphones are another option, and I found the Panasonic RP-HT21 Lightweight Headphones with XBS port for increased bass response to work just fine, for exceptionally small extra expense.

If the basics are good, the bells and whistles are just often-greasy gravy. I'm happy at this point, satisfied with my decision.

 "Happy with my puchase!" 2009-09-09
By Epicurus (Ocean West)
PROS: This player is affordable and easy to use. The 7" screen is adequate for personal viewing. For group viewing the unit has a composite NTSC video output for connection to larger TVs. This unit played every kind of disc I could locate in my library: CDs, MP3 CDs, VCDs (NTSC & PAL), DVDs (NTSC & PAL).

CONS: It's easy to accidentally push the "Open" button, but taping the cover down solves this problem. The volume could be a bit higher, but earphones or outboard amplified speakers solves this problem. While the unit has a "Disc Menu" button, it lacks a "Title Menu" button - which is important for some DVDs. I don't know of a work-around for this, unless you want to re-author your DVDs.

All-in-all I'm pleased with my purchase.

This is the first portable dvd player I've owned so I don't have any precise comparisons, and I've only had it a month so I can't say much about durability, but so far it works great. Operation is easy and intuitive, the sound is good, and the picture is crisp and plenty bright. My only complaint is pretty minor: it is too easy to accidentally hit the "open" button on the side of the machine.

 "Great Buy" 2009-06-29
By S. L. Thill (Green Bay WI)
As we have frequent car trips of 2 hours to visit family on weekends, we picked up this DVD player for our 20 month old toddler. Our trips are now happy trips. This is a perfect size, the picture and sound are great. It easily plugs into any TV where we stay to view movies on a standard size TV for the family.

Most importantly it works well and our trips are now comfortable for everyone and she no longer minds the time it takes to get there. The battery does last two hours but we just plug it in to the included car adapter and we don't worry about it.

This player is so easy to run you don't really need the instructions.

Great Buy.

We did not get a DVD play in our van because we only want it on long trips. Our previous unit was a single unit that we propped up between our kids. This unit attaches to our headrests and each kid can look at their own screen. They still fight over what movie to watch, but it's a decent unit, with a nice screen. It comes with a split car power plug to power both units, a cable to connect them, a wall power plug for a single unit and a cable to plug into a tv. you will need extra cables to match your tv exactly.

"Does not play DVD formats it says it does." 2009-08-21

I put in a backup copy of one of my dvd's and all it did was spin, trying to search for the video. I tried several different copies of backups, but none worked. I put in an original and it worked fine. I have 5 other dvd players (3 for home theaters and 2 for portable use) and all of them play my backups great. I called Philips customer support and the answer I got was "A lot of portable dvd players have problems playing copies of DVD's, even though the box states it will play them, they sometimes don't.". What kind of customer support is that? I would understand if my backups did not play on any dvd player, but they play fine on my other ones. If you plan on using originals only, then from the 10 minutes I used it, this would be a fine player.
