For everyone who cannot find the proper serial number, I feel your pain. I just spent a short amount of time looking for the solution and finally decided to check the disk. In VERY SMALL FONT on the right side of the disk you will see a WINDVD Serial Number, about 16-20 characters long. I have to say however that Toshiba did a bang up job putting the S/N on the disk which must be in the drive when you are trying to install it. Just remember to push the disk back in after you enter the number and before you hit >Next.
Hope this helps everyone involved. Please try and pass the word to any other sites you've posted your question to.

I bought it for my Toshiba NB205 netbook, thinking that since it is also made by Toshiba it would work fine. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The computer recognied the drive but I could not install DVD play software. The software did not accept the serial number of the drive. Toshiba tech suport coul not help either. I returned the drive to the store next day.

I bought this drive because my internal drive stopped working. When I took it out of the box the first thing I noticed was how pretty it was, but after that it all went down hill...
I couldn't get my HP laptop to read the installation software. So after searching the internet relentlessly for a solution, I finally called Toshiba... the only customer support they had was for laptops.
I was sent on a phone hunt searching for the correct department until finally the last number I was given ended up being "unavailable from [my] area".
The Toshiba customer service guy was completely clueless (although nice) about the CD/DVD Drives. All he knew was laptops and had no clue where to send me.
I have no clue if this drive works, but it is going right back to best buy. I am super pissed that this isn't working and that Toshiba seems clueless about the products they put out.
If I am buying a CD/DVD drive, why would the only installation software be available ON a CD. Why not online...just incase the reason Im buying the drive is because my current one doesn't work...

Just bought this today at Best Buy ($70.00). Got home and simply plugged it into my laptop and works like a charm. Primary reason for buying this DVD burner is that the BLURAY drive that came with my laptop does not support CD+G discs.

Purchased locally @BestBuy ($70) to use with new Acer Aspire 1 Netbook (from WOOT). Installation required S/N to install WinDVD and would not accept S/N on disk and still unable to load (waiting on Toshiba). Writes software to the Netbook just fine and plays music CDs fine, just need to get the burner installed. Drive only requires use of one leg of Y USB cable.
