"Nice unit if you never have to call customer service at Archos" 2009-09-15
By Jennifer Blanchard (Chester, VT USA)
I received my Archos 605 WiFi two weeks ago. I find it a wonderful product for picture quality but durability is not there. The pathetic sleeve they send with it is useless with no strap it secure unit or for fastening to a belt loop.

My "first" call to customer service for my free plug-ins, took calling three times waiting 12 to 15 minutes each time. The first two calls I waited 12 to 15 minutes then the call was dropped. The third time was a charm, however, I still waited about 15 minutes before a customer service representative answered. She put me on hold for another 20 minutes figuring out and emailing the codes which I did not receive all seven. After downloading one would not work but ok, it was only a game pack.

Today, the unit slipped out of the ridiculous sleeve and the touch screen broke. I called customer service, another 20 minute wait, explaining that it was my fault (sort of - secure sleeve would not have allowed this) and ask what could be done. The CSR (customer service representative) was nice and explained the glass would need to be replaced by them. I asked how much it would cost. I was told it would be 155.00 plus shipping. I explained I bought the unit for $154.99 two weeks ago and just used it today because I did a partial charge. She said sorry and that was all she could do, warranty did not cover a broken screen.

THINK TWICE BEFORE BUYING THIS UNIT. IF YOU EVER NEED CUSTOMER SERVICE, YOU HAVE MY SYMPATHY. THIS IS NOT WORTH THE AGGRAVATION!

 "Terrible features" 2009-09-06
By imgonna...
I was excited to receive my archos player but soon after opening it up I realized all the functionality is controlled by archos. What I am referring to is paying for virtually every function on the device (move software, etc.). After about 30 minutes I realized I would have to pay an additional 50-100 dollars in software that is compatible with the device. I decided to return the product as it does not do everything that its marketed to do "out of the box". Highly disappointed with archos - will not be purchasing anything form them again.

"Expensive and unreliable - great product when it works though" 2009-09-03
By R. Osterwise
I have had my Archos 605 WiFi 160G model for almost a year now. It's kept in pristine condition, never dropped, no blems, etc. When it works, I love it. When it doesn't, I hate everything the company stands for.

The pros: The display is great... touch screen interface... great... user interface... great... movie quality... great... all in all technology of the software is wonderful. I purchased the docking station and the playback on the big screen is amazing. Records with ease with the remote.

However... with the good, comes the bad...

The cons: hard disk life is disappointing. This unit has been sent back twice for 2 disk drive replacements (or repairs) now but has had 3 HD failures (first one covered where I bought it online). All in all, I purchased the unit 11 months ago, and have been without it for 2.5+ of those months (it's still in repair after 6 weeks so I have no idea what my total time will be). I was quite disappointed at the first failure (failed within first 3 months). That was covered by the seller (I believe it was just swapped out as all my media was gone. Two months later, another disk failure again but this time it allowed me to "reformat it" to fix it using the repair menu... of course again losing GIGs of music/tv recordings/etc in the process. The latest failure was a complete failure of the disk. Obtained a new RMA (still under the same 1st year warranty). The device is still at Archos (over 6 weeks now with no status or feedback) from them other then "we are processing your RMA" on the website. They have not provided any update and their customer service AVR number (1-877-300-8879) keeps you on music-hold for 15 minutes before disconnecting you and making you call back in and the cycle repeats. Their customer service is as poor as the quality of hard disks they use in this model. No one to answer the phone for either RMA confirmation nor technical support.

Summary: spend your $400 dollars on a device with a good history or with a company with more reputable customer support. It's amazing to see a product that costs so much have such poor backing by the manufacturer. I thought spending that kind of money that I was getting a top of the line model, but unfortunately I just received a high-dollar lemon.

"Some Greatness But Overshadowed by Flaws" 2009-08-30
By Doggymcnuggets (Birmingham, AL USA)
This is my 3rd Archos product (had the wonderful Gmini 400 & equally good 504) & while it has many great features and lots of potential, it suffers from some unforgivable flaws. The 605 is truly a powerful multimedia device, able to record audio & video via an optional dock. This is its greatest feature for me. I record movies and tv shows all the time, I've ripped old LPs, recorded audio from the web, & just love the recording abilities. The audio quality is great, the video quality via the unit's screen is also great (not reflective at all, doesn't scratch easily or pick up finger prints), the touch screen works really well, it is a very serviceable photo viewer, and the wifi functionality opens up lots of doors like streaming media and surfing the web.

With all this good stuff, why only 2 stars? First the biggie: the 605 suffers from a periodic crippling slowdown. About 25% of the time when I'm listening to music on the 605 & then try to control the unit (change songs, adjust the volume, turn it off) it takes about 30 seconds to respond. I've seen numerous reports of this on the web and it is totally unacceptable! Imagine the frustration of having a device that can do so much but won't respond! I wonder if this could be fixed with a firmware upgrade, but Archos hasn't. In fact, Archos has increasingly shortened the life cycle of support for their products. Don't expect more than 2 or 3 firmware upgrades early on and then the company is on to the development of the next generation model and owners of the older ones are out of luck if any lingering problems exist.

Another annoyance is Archos' removal of a great feature from previous generations of their players. My Gmini 400 & 504 could both output AUDIO AND VIDEO via the unit's headphone jack. To watch movies from my Archos onto a TV I could use a standard camcorder a/v cable from the headphone jack into the TV. That functionality has been removed from the 605, so no more video output to the tv without a cumbersome docking cradle. Having used this feature often on earlier Archos products, I see this as a big let-down. It was unnecessary for Archos to remove this feature & is simply a way for them to charge for additional accessories by intentionally placing limitations on the unit. I even own a docking cradle, but I don't want to go through the headache of disassembling my home theater setup whenever I feel like watching my 605's videos on a tv outside of my home (think vacationing, traveling, at a friend's, etc).

A final frustration is Archos' sneaky use of an ID process on the hard drive that prohibits buyers from ever replacing or upgrading the player's hard drive. Archos purposefully encodes an ID number on the hard drive that the 605 unit must see in order to function - try to put in a new hard drive and it simply won't work. If you drop your player or if the drive goes bad after your warranty then you are screwed, because only Archos can replace your hard drive...and expect to pay a big premium for them to do it. I dropped my 504 and the cost of replacing the 80gb drive (which only Archos can do) was nearly as much as buying a new unit. Once again, Archos is intentionally putting unnecessary limitations on their products in order to get more of my money.

I've been a big Archos fan for years, owning 3 of their players. I prided myself on having devices that were really cool & did way more than everyone else's Ipod. Sadly my days of Archos love are over. The occasionally crippling slowdown that plagues the 605 is reason enough to say no more, but the company's cannibalistic design & service practices are just the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

"Archos has an undeserved bad reputation...." 2009-08-27
By Alvaro E. Siman (Miami, Florida)
Maybe it was the people who bought the WiFi 605 upon its initial release that ran into a lot of trouble with bugs and support. However, I have had the item now for 2 months, and have been expecting a nightmare. All I have seen from the device is great. I also contacted support and reached a human within a reasonable amount of time on both ocassions. I am VERY HAPPY with my unit, and am buying more accessories for it. My only complaint is that there are software options that should be included, like a web browser. However, the rest of the unit is great value for the price. You get a portable music/video player that beats the iPod in many ways. You get a Tivo. You get a nice amount of storage to carry all your critical files. With a reasonable amount of money you get a GPS and a video camera. Ifu bought all those devices separatly you can easily spend four times the money. My regret is not getting the 160 gb version, as I am now in the process of ripping all of my DVDs to DivX or Xvid so I can carry them with me wherever I go along with my full music library. Lets see an iPhone do that for this price!!!!!!!! Oh, yeah....I almost forgot. As a photographer I always need a portable hard drive to dump all my photos on while on an outdoor shoot. Yes, the Archos supports Camera RAW with its crisp screen for you to clear your card and then browse through the photos on that great screen!!!!
