Sony’s newly re-styled DVDirect® DVD recorder, the VRD-MC5, allows home video and digital photos to be recorded to DVD without a PC. The VRD-MC5 can be connected to virtually any camcorder, VCR, even Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) for direct recording of video to standard DVDs playable on most consumer DVD players. The MC5 also incorporates memory card slots for the 5 popular camera memory card types and will directly record images from the memory card to DVD as a playable slideshow or just for photo storage. The built in 2.5” color LCD screen makes it easy to preview video or view up to 6 digital pictures at a time. The VRD-MC5 thrusts DVDirect into the high definition world by supporting transfer of AVCHD video to DVD. AVCHD is a high definition camcorder format supported by some Sony Handycam camcorders. For example, high definition AVCHD video can be transferred from Sony hard disk or Memory Stick based Handycam camcorders to DVD in native 1080i resolution and played back on most Blu-ray Disc™ players /recorders and other compatible devices. The VRD-MC5 can also transfer video from Sony standard definition and AVCHD HDD/MemoryStick Handycam camcorders at up to 6X speed, which translates to 1 hour of video recorded in about 10 minutes. Record all the video to DVD from Sony HDD/MemoryStick Handycam camcorders, just selected scenes, even just the video shot since the last DVD burn. Full support for 4:3 full screen or 16:9 wide screen video and Dolby® Digital 5.1 surround sound.

 "WORKS AS ADVERTISED" 2009-09-01

If you're like me and have a pile of old VHS tapes you downloaded from your camcorder or TV this item will copy them beautifully and simply. It does what it says it will very well. I'm very pleased to have great DVD's now in place of deteriorating old VHS tapes. I use it often and it never fails to deliver.

"Worked great with my Mac" 2009-08-30

Made over 50 Dual Layer DVD's form Sony Memory card camcorder. Made duplicates using my mac book pro. Hooked it up to Mac with no issues. Mac recognized the drive and burned all with ease. Fast for making discs from the camcorder and 8X for Dups.

 "Easy to use" 2009-08-14

I just hook it up to my vcr and put in my vhs tapes watch it play and make a dvd. I can stop it to leave out parts of the vhs tape that I do not want on the dvd. The picture quality is great so is the sound. It was well worth the price for the job it does.

"VHS to DVD. Worked perfectly the first time out." 2009-08-08
By P. Stein (Beavercreek, OH)
I had already transferred all my 8 and super 8 tapes to VHS. I purchased this item to transfer my VHS tapes to DVD. The setup is very easy, and the process was flawless. Make sure you finalize. Everything is clearly explained in the manual. My only problem is that I forgot how poor the quality of VHS tapes is, compared to what we have today. I'm trying to borrow a working Hi 8 camcorder, so I can input via the camcorder, and get better copies. So if you have VHS tapes to turn into DVDs, this is a great item. This item will pay for itself quickly.

The manual makes it clear that most discs are acceptable. I used Maxwell, DVD +R, 4.7, 16X, 2 hrs. It appears that DVD-R DL is not supported. DVD+R DL is also only partially supported. Also, CD-R, CD-RW, and 8-cm DVD are not supported.

I think a cost effective approach will be to purchase a Sony 60 GB, standard definition Hard Drive camcorder, and then use this machine to record everything onto the disc. Probably saves a lot on memory sticks, or whatever. I'll be watching Thanksgiving sales for the camcorder.

"Amazon's Technical Details Incorrect >>> Sony VRD-MC5 Has No 320GB Hard Disk or Other Critical Features" 2009-07-16
By Lee B. Balthazar (Chicago, IL)
Amazon's technical details for the Sony VRDMC5 as of July 16, 2009 are grossly inaccurate. According to the Sony link below, there is:

- No 320GB hard disk

- No 7200 RPM hard disk spin rate

- No capability to burn DVDs from a PC USB connection

- No capability to serve as an external PC burner

Amazon needs to be more careful when posting product details. I almost bought one of these based on the technical details Amazon listed.
