Thought a netbook could not handle the new games? Well wrong. The ASUS Eee PC 1201N is just what any avid gamer wants while traveling light. Granted the AUS Eee PC 1201N does not have the horse power to run CPU intensive apps ... but who wants that when you are on the go. Email, Web Surfing, Blogging, Tweeting, IM'ing and Video Chat are what you basically want to run in a netbook; and GAMES for those looking to frag and pwn whenever they can. A lot of folks tout about battery life. I'm getting approx 3-4hrs on the 1201n not the best, but I'm never too far from an power outlet.
Little know fact: The 1201n can support 64bit os (i.e., window 7 64bit) This allows you to take advantage of memory over 3.5GB (up to 8GB). By default you get Window 7 32bit and 2GB or RAM (not too shabby). Also, the Atom 330N can be over-clocked .. I'll just leave it at that.
Now, there are lots of reviews on the ASUS 1201N on the net (mostly positive, so you don't need me to convince you.) I you are looking for a netbook that does the basic w/o the need of game and HD-media, you can get any cheap $200-300 netbooks (sub $200 if you search hard enough.) However if you are in the hankering for gaming and HD-meida, you'll need either a netbook or notebook with a pretty powerful graphic. The Asus 1201n has the Nvidia ION, which out-powers any other integrated chipset in the netbook and low-end notebook market. If you were to look for a good video chipset in a Notebook, expect to spend close to (and even over) $1K. So, the fact that the ASUS 1201n is sub $500 to me is a good deal. Now mind you, if want to wait ... there will always be better, powerful and probably cheaper netbook coming around the corner. My personal advice on waiting is: You'll grow old waiting before you'll buy one because there'll always a better one down the road and so on. The decision is ultimately yours. Think what you what and how you will use it; not occasionally, but seriously. You will not regret your decision.
All in all, I love this little netbook, it's doing exactly what I wanted when I'm on the move ... wish it was a bit smaller still though :p
Hope this review helps.

I wanted a small and light computer to bring with me everywhere I go.
I tried some smaller netbooks before, but the small screen size isn't very useful except for browsing web or consulting email. And if you really want to work (writing docs or programming), you need some very sharp eyes with a 10" wide screen ! The eee pc 1201N has a 12" wide screen, and despite the glossy finish, which is a bit annoying if there's too much light, it's very precise and comfortable.
I also wanted a computer with enough CPU to run Flash games on it: I was very surprised to see how they run smoothly on that netbook (for comparison, I ran a shoot'em up on an old P4 2.8Ghz and the game was very slow and jerky ont it whereas it was smooth and nervous on my eee pc 1201N). However, every things come at a price: the autonomy is rather short (3 or 4 hours), the air fan is a bit noisy and it's heavier than 10" netbooks.
So, the pros are:
- very comfortable and precise screen
- enough cpu to run some usual programs (word 2007, flash games, etc.)
- I really like the trackball
- Linux/Ubuntu runs on it
- I can bring it everywhere
And some few cons:
- the glossy screen might be annoying
- it's a bit heavier than a 10" netbook
- a bit noisy
- dissipated heat
My final opinion: the eee pc 1201N appears to be more an ultra-portable than a netbook, but at a very low price !

I was very excited to preorder the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1201N-PU17-SL 12.1-Inch Silver Netbook. I thought a netbook with everything you would want from a laptop would be the best of all worlds. However, not to be. I have been using a netbook Lenovo S10 for the last 1 1/2 years. I am still using it as much or more than my new ASUS. I increased the RAM to 6 megs (very costly)on the new ASUS but still find it no faster than my 2 meg Lenovo with the old Windows XP. Further, I dislike the key board. I find the keys very stiff and hard to use. Many typos result from the stiff keys.
In conclusion, not worth the money. If I had to do it again I would buy the latest Lenovo and be done with it. In fact, I would likely buy nothing and keep using the Lenovo I have as I am still using it. The ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1201N-PU17-SL 12.1-Inch Silver Netbook has been a big disappointment. Save your cash!
P.S. Not overly impressed with the new Atom Processor!

After spending a few days looking at several lightweight laptops and netbooks, I finally decided on this one, based on the specs and reviews here at amazon. I was searching for a lightweight computer to take to school with me, for taking notes during class and viewing various media and also something to surf the web with in between classes. FedEx delivered it yesterday and I set it up right away. It's true that the black case easily shows fingerprints (and wrist prints lol), but I still find it sleek and attractive. If you look closely in bright light, you can see blue glitter in the black plastic, which I think is really pretty. (Don't worry guys, you really have to look closely to notice this and it looks really cool anyway). I was concerned about the screen being overly glossy, because that's something I'm rather sensitive to (I hate seeing my reflection in my computer it makes me start fussing with my hair lol) but the gloss on the screen hasn't been an issue for me yet and I've used it in a bright lecture hall and in a sunny room. I took it to class today and after a 2 hour lecture during which I was running word, powerpoint and firefox, there was an estimated 3 hours of battery life left. One of the most important features for me was a fullsize keyboard. I've tried using friends' smaller netbooks and the reduced keyboard size on them drastically slows down my typing. I can switch back and forth between my old keyboard (an Asus gaming laptop) and the one on this Asus netbook and have no problems typing whatsoever. I like the touchpad, haven't experienced any problems with it. It's dimpled, but still feels smooth enough and has ease of use. The integrated webcam and microphone are of good quality; much better than my laptop that I bought new last year. The webcam especially has a really nice picture. I have the screen set on the dimmest setting, which is perfectly acceptable to me; I don't need it any brighter. I've found that if you set the screen brightness to the same level for your plugged in and battery settings, you won't ever notice the difference and you'll easily adjust to the level of brightness and get more battery life. The only problem I've had with it so far is that it's sometimes slow loading webpages and downloading things. I have a fios connection at home so I know it's not a problem on my end, but it could be some firewall setting that I haven't discovered yet. This is my second Asus machine, and I have to say I really love the brand. I've had several other brands in the past and I've never been truly impressed with a computer company before I owned an Asus. I'd recommend this netbook to anyone who wants a a multitasking machine that is lightweight, but not tiny. It's very light but the fact that it has a fullsize keyboard makes it the perfect machine for word processing away from home or the office. The battery life is decent, but if long battery life is an important feature to you, or it you're just looking for something to surf the web with and watch movies (i.e. not doing a lot of typing), I'd go with a less expensive smaller model. I'll update if I discover any problems, but so far I'm very pleased.

I've only had it for about a week now but I really love this netbook. While for the price point it falls into the 'netbook' category, you should really think of it as a low cost ultra-portable laptop as it has horsepower and graphics capabilities of heavier / more expensive laptops.
Highlights:
Atom 330z Processor - This is a Dual Core proc w/ hyper threading so it appears you have four cores while running.
ION Graphics - This really is the crown jewel of this device - Full screen playback of youTube & Hulu with no jitters, plus it supports playback of most current games at reasonable framerates (WoW, CoD), etc.
12.1" Glossy screen - Very clear and easy to see. I generally prefer a glossy screen so this is good for me, but if you like Matte better then keep that in mind.
250 Gig HDD - Very reasonable amount of disk space for just about any application.
Windows 7 Home Premium - This version has pretty much everything you'll ever want, unless you need to join a 'Domain' work environment or host an RDP session.
HDMI Output - Verified that it will output an HDMI signal to my TV with no problems.
Primarily purchased this device to use for writing stories / scripts as well as some web browsing / game playing.
Negatives:
Wired Ethernet Port - Only contains 10/100 Ethernet which can make the install of programs and music take a long time when moving large amounts of data.
Keyboard Flex - There is a slight bit of flex in the keyboard, specifically around the 'ASDF' section of keys. Not that bad in my opinion, but worth noting.
Warm Exhaust - On the left side of the device is where it vents the air from the system. This can get warm. Not hot mind you, but warm.
Bloatware - Comes with a certain amount of bloatware which can be uninstalled, or taken care of be wiping & re-installing from a USB key.
Battery Life - While it's much better than any laptop I've had before giving about 3 to 3.5 hours of gaming performance on a charge, and longer with just writing / web browsing, I still would always appreciate a few more hours of life. Other netbooks might last longer on battery but will have no where near the same performance levels. Might consider getting an additional / extended battery someday if they offer it.
While the negative list above looks like a long set of detractions, they are not. I mentioned them so you will be aware of these few items so you can be fully warned.
