"Adequate Computer, LOUSY Customer Service" 2010-02-01
By A. Talboys (New Hampshire United States)
I bought this machine six months ago because it was Amazon's top rated netbook and I really wanted one to help flesh out my home set-up. I had reservations spending so much on a company I wasn't familiar with but the webpage promised all kinds of quality and customer service and the reviews here glowed with the light of a thousand golden smiles, so I went for it. I also bought the Crucial memory upgrade at the same time and it was a very easy install.

Since then, I have gotten about two months of use out of the computer.

Three weeks after I bought it, the power supply went dead. These things happen sometimes so I called Asus to get it replaced. They said they would replace it, but they did not have the piece in stock and could not tell me when they would be back. Three weeks is just long enough for me to become dependent on a machine and move into it, so there were files on it that I really needed to access.

Asus sent me an RMA form for the return. This is a PDF file which I was to print and fill out with my credit card number and fax back to them so that, should I fail to hold up my end of the bargain and send back the faulty power supply within fourteen days, they could comfortably charge my credit card for the new one. They also could not tell me how much that would cost. Once I signed away the right to charge me some indeterminable amount of cash, I was to fax the form back to them.

I don't know about anyone else but I work from home and have not needed to fax anything since email learned to accept attachments. I have not even seen a fax machine in probably ten years. A rep at Asus insisted my local shopping mall had one for public use. That rep obviously lives somewhere far from here, because there is no local shopping mall with a public fax machine near me.

I bought another Asus brand power supply from Amazon because they did have it in stock. I figured the original would get replaced and I would have two in the end, and that's always handy.

Two weeks later, the replacement power supply that I bought also went dead. Now, my first computer was a TRS-80; I've had my hands on these types of machines for twenty seven years and I don't need to spout a bunch of technical jargon to feel confident saying that I did not treat these power supply cords poorly. This is not a question of abuse or misuse. They very simply stopped working all on their own, all of a sudden.

So I went back to Asus and complained. And complained. And complained.

They argued that since I bought the second power supply from Amazon, they could not be responsible for it despite the fact that ASUS was clearly printed across the side of the box. They expressed deep and obviously insincere sympathy for my having purchased a faulty adapter from Amazon but informed me that "Amazon is not authorized to sell Asus products". To which I had to express -my- deep sympathy that they had not noticed Amazon's top rated netbook was their product, but that I still expected them to replace both faulty adapters. I only bought the second one because they couldn't replace the first one, and both stopped working within thirty days of purchase.

At this point I feel it is relevant to note that Asus not only has the lowest possible rating with the BBB (reportedly because of a lack of follow-through with issues like mine), they also have the worst telephone technology since cans on string. They are nearly impossible to understand and there is so much background noise it's very hard to hear them in the first place. This is something I have noticed across the board every time I call them.

So after an hour and a half of fighting with both Simon (a rep) and Jane (supposedly a manager), Jane agreed to "request" that I be sent two replacements and that she could not confirm right then whether the "request" would be "approved". But she would let me know by 6pm CST if it was not. I heard nothing and two days later called back to confirm. The man I spoke to, Peter, assured me that it had been "requested" and "there should be no problem", and that I would not need a new RMA form. Trusting this, I filled out the form and amended it for x2 and called in a huge favor to get a friend to fax the form from her office.

Three months later, I called again. In order to get any answers at all, I had to explain the entire story again. And then I had to, again, inform them that I had now been promised two replacements by Jane. The part was still not in stock. They still could not tell me when they would be in, or how much they would cost if I were to be charged for them.

Three weeks ago, Brianna called me. She had some "questions" about my "case" and had been the one assigned to it. I took this as a positive sign because, hey, at least someone was looking at it. She essentially verified all of my information and I had to explain the situation all over again.

Two weeks ago, I received one half of one power supply. They only replace the part with the box (which plugs into the computer) and not the part that goes to the wall. I checked the box with the cords I have and it worked fine. I still expected a second one. This time it was Ethan that told me that Amazon was "not authorized" to sell Asus parts and I told him, again, that I was promised two and I expected two. I then, for the fourth time, gave them all of my contact information because they had printed it wrong on the packing list. He told me he would speak to Brianna when she came in, and then she would call me back.

She did. Only, apparently Ethan is terrible at relaying messages because I had to explain all over again what was going on. I have lost count at this point how many times I've gone over this with them.

It took a week for them to send me a new RMA for the second power adapter, which I was told originally I would not need. I will now have to find another fax machine to send it to them because there is no other option. In fact every rep seems dumbfounded at the notion that a person might not have a fax machine available at all times for personal use. As a bonus, the adapters are now out of stock again.

And still, no one can tell me when they'll be in or how much they cost. And no one can tell me what to do with the faulty pieces I am hanging onto. Every time I ask, the mysterious answer is, "someone will contact you about that." And the website defaults to a script error every time I visit.

Based on experience, I fully expect there to be a whole lot more drama and potentially another six months before the second cord is replaced. When it is, I am getting rid of this netbook. Altogether I have spent more than $400 on it, which is no bargain at all and more than I will get for it when I find some poor soul to unload it on. This total does not include whatever Asus ends up "accidentally" charging me because of all the confusion, or what I will spend to send the old cords back because I am sure they will not be willing to eat the shipping charges. I understand that it may be a fluke that both cords died so quickly but after what I've had to deal with for something that seems so simple, I'm just plain offended at having an Asus product in my home and don't want it here anymore.

Aside from the customer service issue, I would say it's a perfectly adequate machine. It is not special or exciting or extra anything-at-all, where netbooks are concerned. The touchpad is very awkward, however, and requires more pressure to perform than others I've tried.

I purchased an HP netbook sometime around Christmas. It is lovely. Straight out of the box, I have not had a single problem with it, and if I do I have full confidence that HP will see me through it. They always have.

"Terrible product and worse customer service" 2010-01-31
    By Gina (Orange County)
The laptop works as promised at first, but within a few weeks it began to freeze up and the cursor would disappear regularly. At month 5, the battery completely stopped charging so I could no longer use it unless it was plugged into the wall - I purchased this laptop primarily for the battery life. I tried multiple times to reach the ASUS help desk to resolve the problem only to hold for over 30 minutes each time. I finally logged a case online to protect the six month warranty. They wrote back and told me I had to call customer service to get a replacement battery. Again, after holding for 42 minutes I reached an agent that told me it was now past the six month warranty and I had to pay $180 for a new battery - HALF THE COST OF THE COMPUTER and that my email "didn't count" even though there was a case number. When I asked him if I could send the email to him he told me that he didn't have email! I am completely disgusted with this product and the service level. I have written to ASUS customer service and they will not respond. I now have what I would call a disposable computer with a 5 month life expectancy; very disappointing!

"Great netbook at a great price!!" 2010-01-31
By Kristy Etzel (Iron Mountain, MI)
After some research through "Consumer Reports" I decided to purchase the ASUS Eee PC. So far this netbook has been great! I love the small size yet the keyboard is still big enough to comfortably type my papers on it. The battery life is outstanding and I can quickly browse on the internet. The web cam is pretty good but if you take a still shot you have to be very still otherwise the picture will be blurry. Overall this product is well worth the money and I would recommend it highly.

"it all depends on how you use it" 2010-01-30
By Eduardo A. Farah (Miami FL USA)
I bought this netbook for my wife, since we live in a 2 floors house. we have our desktop in our room (2nd floor) and she had to stay there for hours to show off our new-born baby to the family (abroad).
I bought this to give her mobility inside the house. Now, she can stay longer on the kitchen/living room (1st floor) and talk to family for hours.
It does have a few issues (like poor quality speakers) but overral, it's a very good gadget.
Wireless is great, screen is what you was looking for, so don't complaint on being small, camera is fairly good, sound is fairly good (but could be better). I Would rate 5 star if wasn't for the speakers and the in-built mic.
This shouldn't be your "main" computer. But it helps on mobility, which, by the way, does a lot better than a regular laptop. Considering what you pay for it, I would highly recommend it.
Ah, battery is amazing. MAybe 10hrs is a bit extrema, but it's for sure more than 8 hours.
    cheers,

    Eduardo

    "excelent battery time" 2010-01-30

easy to use, excelent battery time even while constantly on web surfing with wi-fi. The only drawback I see is that it is sometimes slow when more then two web pages open but besides that it is very good. The finish on the outside does also tend to pick up fingerprints very easy
